Why coconut oil spread could be your new kitchen staple
"We’ve spent a lot of time and resources to ensure we’ve created something nutritious, delicious, natural and reasonably priced," says Eng Sieh Mei of Marylebone
I love chocolate hazelnut spread, but I have to admit that there are limits to its uses. (Or maybe I’m just not resourceful or creative enough.)
Other spreads are versatile too (you can even make your own if you want to), but I think it’s still good to have choices – especially for sandwiches and dishes.
Enter Marylebone Coconut Oil Spread by Marylebone Pte Ltd in Singapore. I first heard and read about the product through the 2019 Asia Food Innovation Awards, where it was named a finalist for “Best convenience food” and “Best convenience packaging”.
Other than convenience, though, the coconut oil spread grabs your attention because it’s made from unrefined organic, cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil – which is supposedly good for you, since the process of cold pressing means the coconut-ty taste and nutrients are kept on.
Besides, Marylebone’s spread, in particular, is also free from so many things: artificial colouring, preservatives, trans fat, cholesterol and gluten. Plus it’s vegan and Halal-certified.
“The company’s mission is to create a healthy spread to improve people’s well-being,” says Eng Sieh Mei, Marylebone’s CEO and founder.
“Knowing unrefined coconut oil is a superfood, Marylebone has transformed it into a convenient and easy-to-eat product. We’ve spent a lot of time and resources to ensure we’ve created something nutritious and delicious, and yet natural without any artificial ingredients, and also reasonably priced.” In fact, they won a one-star Superior Taste Award from the International Taste Institute in Brussels, Belgium for their efforts.
Curious? If it’s your first time to hear about coconut oil spread as well, Mei reveals her favourite ways to eat and use it, in case you’d like to give it a go.
#1 Spread it on toast
Reach for the coconut oil spread instead of butter or margarine.
#2 Spread it on your sandwich bread too
“It’s a good replacement for butter, margarine or mayonnaise,” Mei adds. Coat your bread slices with it to help shield them from your wet sandwich fillings.
Oh, and it provides a smooth and “pleasant” flavour to your sandwiches too, according to Mei.
#3 Cook with it
Try it on your sautés and stir-fries.
#4 Bake with it too
“Whether you’re making cakes, cookies, muffins, pancakes or bread, you can switch out the butter or oil with the spread,” Mei advises.
#5 Use it to perk up your coffee or smoothie
Mix a spoonful of the spread in your coffee in place of creamer. Love a creamy smoothie? Adding in the coconut oil spread could be your best bet.
So… have you tried other ways to consume and enjoy coconut oil spread? Or maybe there are other spreads worth seeking out and experimenting with? Let me know. (My breakfast needs a boost.)
