The answer’s yes – and it’s by creating a heritage trail of this area, and by giving that trail a refresh every few years. The self-guided Civic District Heritage Trail in Singapore, for example, is now on its second. Tan Yan Xin, senior manager of Education & Community Outreach at the National Heritage Board (NHB), presents it to us here.

But first, a few fun facts: It’s NHB’s first and oldest heritage trail.

It was launched in 1999, reintroduced as Jubilee Walk in 2015 to mark Singapore’s 50th anniversary, and this year – in line with Singapore’s 60th (SG60) – they’ve created three thematic routes (Journey to Nationhood; Functions of the Civic District; and Seeking Fortunes, Forging New Lives), with more sites and stories added in.

In case it’s your first time, the Civic District includes “the core downtown area”, “from the northern bank of the Singapore River to Fort Canning Park and down Bras Basah Road to the Padang”, according to NHB. You won’t miss it.

“The Civic District is known for its historical and cultural landmarks that tell the story of Singapore’s journey from ancient port to modern city-state,” Yan Xin says.

“Located at the heart of Singapore, it functions as the commercial and cultural core for locals, whilst tourists would be drawn to its architecture, National Monuments and amenities as an attraction.”

Your first thoughts when you found out that the Civic District Heritage Trail would have a second refresh

Yan Xin: “It did not come as a surprise as NHB aims to refresh our heritage trails every 10 to 15 years. It was timely to refresh the trail for SG60 and it was definitely an exciting project to embark on! The first challenge was to see how to make this trail even more interesting and relevant to the younger generations of Singaporeans today.”

“Singapore’s oldest surviving fire station is Central Fire Station, which is more than a century old (since 1909!).

“The Former Fullerton Building housed the General Post office, which featured advanced postal technology – including motorised belts to ferry mail and an underground tunnel connecting the post office to the pier – so that postal workers could bypass Collyer Quay’s traffic.

“Esplanade Park was built on reclaimed land as an extension of the Padang for recreational use. Reclamation work and construction began as early as the 1930s, but the park was only completed after World War II.”

“It’s the most compact route, perfect as a crash course in Singapore’s history. It doesn’t take much time to visit the featured sites and they are all very Insta-worthy!”

• Route 2: Functions of the Civic District

This includes the Former Fullerton Building, Former Supreme Court and National Museum of Singapore, amongst others.

“It’s the longest but most informative route covering the most ground, including a short walk at Fort Canning Park – perfect for those who are up for a challenge and prefer more variety in their sites.”

• Route 3: Seeking Fortunes, Forging New Lives

This includes Capitol Singapore, the Masonic Hall and Armenian Street, just to name a few.

“It’s another compact route focusing on the diverse communities that settled down here after arriving from around the world. I love how it brings out the communities of the Civic District.”

And mine. These are just some of the images that come to mind when I think of the Civic District:

What are your best memories of the Civic District?

Yan Xin: “The Civic District is quite special to me as it holds many ‘firsts’ for me! This place marked my entry into the corporate world when I joined NHB back in 2017. I recall visiting the Singapore Night Festival for the first time with my new colleagues during my first week at work, and it was my first encounter with the many beautiful heritage buildings in the area. I recall being incredibly impressed by the projection mapping at the National Museum of Singapore, as it felt like I was transported to a new world through the visual spectacle of combining technology with a national monument for storytelling. As someone new to this industry, this was an impactful ‘induction’.

“Over the years, this area was integral to me as I visited many events here with family and friends. I will dearly remember how Armenian Street behind the office sprang to life during the Singapore Night Festival in 2023 (I call it ‘an instant transition from work to play’). The street was beautifully lit, with a bazaar with yummy food stalls and energetic live performances. The atmosphere was electric and it felt like I was hanging out with my colleagues and friends in our own backyard.

“Other perks include the proximity of the NHB HQ (previously at Stamford Court) to Fort Canning Park for staff’s ‘Workout Wednesdays’, and surrounding museums that allowed for some arts and heritage indulgence during lunch and after work!”

What is it about the Civic District that feels special to you?

“To me, the Civic District reflects my growth over time – from being fresh out of school eight years ago and getting confused (and sometimes lost) by the buildings in the area, to becoming more acquainted through almost daily encounters and later curating the Civic District Heritage Trail, and learning in detail about the sites in this area.

“I find it very meaningful and privileged to be able to contribute in the form of a heritage trail here. I invite anyone who might be intimidated, like the old me, to explore it with wonder and be ready for new nuggets of information that will help you appreciate what might otherwise be easily taken for granted.

“While preparing for the Civic District Heritage Trail over the past year, I was surprised to discover there were new things to learn about the heritage sites despite having worked in the area for a long time. The experience made me realise that not only had I not paid enough attention to these areas previously, but that there is a tendency to be distracted by what is new (such as changes in an area), so that we forget to notice what has remained throughout all this time. I have learnt to appreciate the sights and sites that came before me and have stood the test of time. They truly deserve our attention and wonder at their history.”

How do you usually spend your time when you’re in the area?

“Having spent the past eight years here (which is also where the NHB HQ was located before our recent move to Beach Road), I have many memories of the programmes and festivals in the Civic District with my family, friends and colleagues. Being centrally located and near the office, I spent much of my time after work exploring food and entertainment options in this area. I used to joke with my friends about how I was more familiar with the Civic District than my own neighbourhood in the East.

“Sometimes, I enjoy returning to the area on weekends when it is relatively quiet to take slow walks between food explorations. It has a completely different atmosphere on weekends – peaceful and spacious – and I am always excited to explore like a tourist in my own city to discover something new.”

What would you say or recommend about the Civic District to first-time visitors?

“Behind these stately facades lie lesser-known stories of the communities who once lived, worked and played in the area. This district became a melting pot when Singapore’s founding drew waves of immigrants from across Asia and beyond. Newcomers from diverse backgrounds forged new lives and created tight-knit communities, transforming this area into the vibrant heart of Singapore.

“Who are these newcomers and why did they come to Singapore? What was Singapore’s Civic District like during this whole time spanning across many generations? What was the Civic District like as a residential district? These are some questions that can be explored in the trail. I encourage all visitors, both familiar and new to the Civic District, to uncover these new narratives of the diverse communities that contributed to early Singapore, and delve further into a lesser-known side of the Civic District’s past as a leisure and entertainment hub. These new research and stories enrich the soul of the Civic District and can be uncovered through the refreshed Civic District Heritage Trail.

“Beyond the three thematic routes available, trail-goers can also use the companion guide, available on our resource portal, Roots, to personalise their own route to suit their needs and interests.”

How does the refreshed trail show us that it’s important to value both the past and the present (and even the future)?

“The story of the Civic District is one of transformation – from the British arrival in 1819, to years of war, Singapore’s independence and nation-building. Today, the Civic District is a cultural and lifestyle destination with vibrant museums, arts and cultural institutions, and exciting place-making developments along the waterfront.

“The refreshed Civic District Heritage Trail allows us to explore these stories and transformations, and to keep alive the past community stories in the area. It covers new heritage trail markers and newly featured heritage sites, and offers additional perspectives about life in the area during the early days, uncovered through new first-hand interviews.

“As Singapore continues to grow and evolve, the Civic District and its surrounding coastline remain at the heart of Singapore’s story. We can glean how the area is a mirror of the nation’s journey: bold, future-ready, and constantly reinventing itself.

“Beyond its current functions, learning about the genesis of these buildings and past events that occurred at these sites provide opportunities for visitors to understand the significance of these sites at the national level across the transformative years leading to SG60. We can, of course, layer on with our own interpretation of what these sites mean to us in today’s context. What kind of fun and deep questions does the trail pose that you believe would be cool for us to ponder on?

“Be curious about the street or place names in the area: Who was Coleman in ‘Coleman Street’? What is the history of ‘Armenian Street’? Fort Canning is called ‘Hill of the royal family’ in Mandarin. Why are there different names and was there really a fort here? And who was Canning?

“Why were the civic buildings located here? What were their former uses?

“What are some of the key events in Singapore’s path to independence that played out in the Civic District?

“What were some of the communities that settled down in the early days of Singapore? Where did they come from? How similar or different did their communities function from one another?

“How was it like living in the Civic District from the 1960s to 1980s? What were some amenities and sites of recreation then?

“How did Singapore’s Civic District evolve across the centuries?”

A lot, apparently – at least if you ask Michele Ko, the regional manager of Southeast Asia at Fever.

A live-entertainment platform, Fever is co-producing the exhibition “Titanic: An Immersive Voyage – Through the Eyes of the Passengers” with Exhibition Hub. You can catch it starting 6th August 2025 at the Fever Exhibition Hall in Singapore.

Since the exhibition title includes the words “immersive” and “through the eyes of the passengers”, expect the 1,300 sqm space to be filled with recreations, personal pieces and unique stories highlighted with the latest technology.

It’s the perfect place to discover more about the Titanic, especially (or even) if you only have a few points of reference.

For example, when Michele thinks of the Titanic, what comes to mind?

“The first thing that comes to mind is how massive and luxurious the ship was. And then, of course, the tragedy that followed,” she says.

“It was this ocean liner that was seen as a symbol of progress and then it became one of the most well-known disasters in history.”

Plus: “I think my first memory of the Titanic was pretty similar to most people’s: it was the (1997) movie. At the time, it just seemed like a big, dramatic story with a lot of emotion and scale,” she recalls.

“But recently, I had the chance to visit Cobh in Ireland (back then it was called Queenstown), which was actually the Titanic’s last port of call. Standing there and knowing it was the final place where passengers boarded before heading across the Atlantic really put things into perspective. It made the whole story feel a lot more grounded and human.”

You just might get the same feeling and experience with the Singapore exhibition.

“What’s really special about the exhibition we’re bringing to Singapore is that people can actually step into that history,” she points out.

What are some of the things about the ship and the tragedy that you believe still resonate with people to this day?

Michele: “I think it’s one of those stories that sticks with people because there are just so many layers to it. There’s the scale of the ship, the idea that it was ‘unsinkable’, and then the shock that it actually sank. But beyond that, I think what really resonates are the personal stories – families travelling together, people starting new lives, and how quickly everything changed.”

What are your before-and-after first impressions of the exhibition?

“Before seeing the exhibition, I expected a traditional, museum-style showcase – mainly focusing on the Titanic’s sinking, with static displays and wall text, much like what we’ve seen in documentaries or pop culture. But after experiencing it, I was surprised by how immersive and emotional it was. The use of video animation, projection mapping and room recreations made it feel cinematic and deeply personal – far beyond just a historical retelling.”

What were some of the challenges your team faced in setting everything up?

“One of the biggest challenges was coordinating across multiple partners, including international rights holders, exhibition designers, local vendors, venue teams and logistics providers. Since the exhibition was originally developed overseas, we had to ensure the experience stayed true to its original vision while also adapting it thoughtfully for the Singapore context.

“This involved adjusting the spatial layout to suit the venue, reworking visitor flow, and localising elements such as language, wayfinding and accessibility to better engage the Singaporean audience. Rather than simply replicating the exhibition, we had to consider how to make it relevant and resonant for a new market.”

How did you prepare for this huge task?

“Honestly, it all comes down to the team. I’m lucky to work with an incredibly dedicated and experienced group of people, both here in Southeast Asia and across Fever globally. Everyone brought their expertise to the table, whether it was operations, marketing, partnerships or production. Preparing for something of this scale definitely takes time and coordination, but having a strong team made all the difference.”

“Definitely the immersive room and the VR experience.”

“Take your time to absorb the details – the exhibition is designed to be immersive, so spend time in each room to fully appreciate the artefacts, recreations and multimedia displays.

“Wear comfortable shoes – you’ll likely be walking and standing quite a bit!

“Take photos, but also remember to pause and enjoy the moment without your phone.”

“One thing I wish more people realised is just how many personal stories are tied to the Titanic. It wasn’t just a luxury liner for the wealthy – there were people from all walks of life on board, from immigrants chasing new opportunities to families travelling together in third class.

“Another fact I wish more people appreciated is that, though we see large cruise ships all the time in today’s time, the Titanic was a marvel of early 20th-century engineering and luxury, seen as nearly unsinkable. This makes the tragedy even more powerful.

“As for the exhibit, many might not realise how it combines original artefacts with modern technology to create an immersive experience. I hope visitors take the time to appreciate the mix of historical accuracy and emotional storytelling that brings the Titanic’s story to life.”

The bravery of individuals like Molly Brown, who helped others during the disaster, and the heartbreaking stories of families separated by class really brought the human side of the tragedy to life. These personal stories make the history more relatable and deeply moving.”

I’m talking specifically of the ocean, and of a cause that contributes to us being able to appreciate its beauty even more because of their efforts. I’ve come across Ocean Purpose Project (OPP) – a social enterprise based in Pasir Ris, Singapore that focuses on “ocean conservation and plastic pollution prevention”.

It does all this through three key pillars: Plastic to Fuel, which is about “transforming ocean waste into low-sulphur fuel, carbon black and carbon nanotubes through OPP’s deployable pyrolysis machines”; Bioplastics, which is about “creating a single-use plastic alternative from seaweed and mussels that purifies our seas”; and Behaviour Change, which is about “mobilising corporates and communities through offline projects, like beach clean-ups and Blue Carbon projects in Singapore and Bali, and online programmes like the OPPortunity Webinar and social media campaigns”.

Whew. As you can see, they do a lot of work.

And it doesn’t stop, either. How can it? Mathilda D’Silva, Ocean Purpose Project’s CEO and founder, cites one recent piece of news about the ocean that has stuck with her.

“The oceans cover 71 per cent (and rising) of the Earth’s surface,” she shares.

“Scientists are finding microplastics in the deepest parts of the ocean, including the Mariana Trench and even in the air of the mountains and within human bodies. This highlights the pervasive nature of plastic pollution and its impact on even the most remote and pristine environments.”

Aside from pollution, there’s marine life disappearing, too. “The oceans contain 97 per cent of the Earth’s water,” Mathilda adds.

“If oceans fail, the planet is toast – literally. If we don’t act now to take care of the ocean, we also stand to lose vital ecosystem services that support human well-being, such as climate regulation, coastal protection, and nutrient cycling.

“Furthermore, the loss of biodiversity and degradation of marine habitats can have profound cultural and spiritual implications for coastal communities around the world.”

Here’s another

“In 2018, there were more than 300 reported incidents of toxic or harmful algae blooms around the world. That number is growing with virtually no concerted efforts to address the source of the pollution or mitigate its effects,” she stresses.

“It’s precisely why our work at Ocean Purpose Project matters so much. Just one seaweed and mussel line filters 48,000 litres of seawater a day – no energy used, working 24/7, 365 days a year. If this was done by a machine, the cost of a machine that can do that amount is SG$33,000, using enough energy to power two small American homes for a year.”

You’ve probably heard it all before

Or something similar. But maybe Mathilda’s recollections will make it feel more personal, and the images more vivid.

“When I say ocean health and human health are intertwined, I speak from personal experience,” she says.

“Last week I had a frightening experience. During a clean-up, sea water in Pasir Ris splashed into my eye. Coupled with complications from Sjogren’s Syndrome, it led me to lose my sight for two days. All I saw was white, and the pain was excruciating.

“Since 2015, when exposure to polluted water in Boracay (Philippines) triggered multiple autoimmune issues in my body, I could feel ocean pollution acutely because it affects me in so many ways,” she continues.

“I hide a lot of my symptoms and difficulties well – most people this week did not know how much pain I was in or why I had sunglasses on at night or closed my eyes during meetings. The fear of losing sight, movement, skin and hair colour is something so hard to accept especially when it moves so quickly through my system.”

This doesn’t have to happen

To you or to anyone. And if you want that one piece of news about the ocean that has stuck with you to change, here’s what Mathilda suggests we consider.

#1 Don’t be afraid

“The world seems to be frightened of difficult and humungous work,” she observes.

“More resilience is needed by the sustainability community to tackle deeply entrenched issues such as plastic pollution, and to look at things logically instead of wallowing in emotion.

“The politics of ocean conservation and the collective will to take concrete actions that lead to transformations takes many forms, from the politics of participation to the profound differences in political power, to the ability and inability to control the narrative, to access to marine resources and existing academic knowledge.”

#2 Look at the data

“I am a huge fan of data-driven conversations; collaborative styles of working that I learned from many Indonesian startups and NGOs; and getting stuck in, learning from the industry and always looking at numbers to tell the story instead of feelings,” she goes on.

#3 Celebrate milestones (and let it remind you to keep going)

“I wish people understood how monumental our projects are – we’re doing such unique work that pulls multiple stakeholders to work together instead of riding off trends or copying off existing ideas,” she points out.

“It isn’t easy to do pioneering work where even industry professionals and academia ask for our advice, but this is why we need all the help we can get to move our First in Singapore projects forward – like our Plastic to Hydrogen project, which not only addresses plastic pollution, but also provides an innovative solution to energy sustainability.

“Additionally, our Bioplastics initiative showcases the potential of nature-based alternatives to traditional plastics, contributing to a circular economy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.”

“Some of my favourite experiences and lessons during my work for Ocean Purpose Project include witnessing the positive impact of our projects on local communities; connecting with passionate individuals and organisations working towards similar goals; and learning from the resilience and ingenuity of nature in the face of environmental challenges,” Mathilda reveals.

“A former villager of Kampong Pasir Ris referred to me as Penghulu – because our office stands close to where the original shoreline of Pasir Ris used to be. Penghulu means ‘village chief’ in Bahasa Melayu; to me this is a tremendous honour.

“It is not easy to earn the respect of fishermen and grassroots leaders who even today appear in the mornings to help us water plants. Money or influence cannot buy the freedom of building new solutions to ocean pollution together with the sometimes invisible members of coastal communities.”

So think about your love for the ocean

“The salt water, the pulse and surges of the current, the magnified beat of your heart, and the muffled sounds reverberating through the water together recall the womb. The sea, it is said, is like a mother,” Mathilda muses.

“What I love about the ocean is its vastness and beauty, its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and awe, and its role as a source of inspiration and rejuvenation.

“For me, the ocean represents a profound connection to nature, a reminder of our interconnectedness with all living beings, and a call to action to protect and preserve this precious resource for future generations.”

I’m not as poetic as Mathilda, but I can say that the ocean makes me feel at peace. It reminds me of my childhood. It gives me a chance to hear and listen to my thoughts clearly. It frees me (for a while) from stress. I don’t feel alone. It centres me. It also saddens me to know that when I look at all that green and blue, various marine life are suffering.

We can’t just leave it at that, can we? With Ocean Purpose Project, I’m reminded that my outlook and future beach itinerary need an update.

Next is the food. I look forward to checking out the busy stalls and restaurants, even if I can’t eat or go into each and every one.

Third is the history. What’s old or unique to the area? Where are the interesting mementos and back stories?

And the people, of course.

But there’s so much more to a neighbourhood or precinct than just these four elements. Though if you think that’s a good start; are pressed for time; and/or are on the hunt for a neighbourhood to explore that offers this combination, may I suggest Katong-Joo Chiat? (That’s in Singapore, by the way, in case you’re wondering.)

Through the National Heritage Board’s (NHB) “Street Corner Heritage Galleries: Katong-Joo Chiat”, you’ll get to know the area from six heritage businesses that have seen and experienced its growth best.

These businesses – Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Popiah, Joo Chiat Fei Fei Wanton Noodle House, Kim Choo Kueh Chang, Guan Hoe Soon Restaurant, Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh, and D’Bun – have been running for decades, so they have a lot to share. And for the “Street Corner Heritage Galleries” programme, they are able to do it through mini museums that have been created with the help of the NHB. (I, for one, would love to find out which valuable items they’ve chosen to highlight their memories and milestones best.)

Then again, you absolutely cannot leave without trying their bestsellers too.

For this post, we turn to Edmond Wong, the third-generation owner of Kim Choo Kueh Chang (which is famous for their kueh chang or Nyonya rice dumplings), for insights and tips – which we hope will inspire you to visit the Katong-Joo Chiat neighbourhood and others as well, and view them (and your place in them) in a different light. It’s certainly a nice way to spend a day or weekend.

“During my childhood, I had the privilege of spending a significant amount of time in nature, climbing coconut trees, constructing forts with my neighbours, and enjoying simple pleasures like tossing rocks into the canals that crisscrossed our neighbourhood.

“Although those places have disappeared and my interests have evolved in adulthood, I find solace in arranging business meetings within the neighbourhood. This practice fosters a sense of tranquillity and mutual trust, allowing me to share memories with individuals who may not have experienced our locality before.

“I often frequent various traditional stores run by the younger generation, where handcrafted prata is served, or visit an elderly couple who serves congee – an all-time favourite for those who live or used to reside in our neighbourhood.”

“My siblings and I always cherish the time spent visiting our parents, indulging in the delight of my mother’s home-cooked meals,” he recalls.

“It’s essential to recognise that every household has its own family favourites that draw them back home, either to relish the familiar flavours or to make special requests from their home-cooking mothers. Similarly, we have our own preference, which is to enjoy the distinctive taste of my mother’s home-cooked Peranakan dishes.

“With numerous favourites to choose from, if I had to pick one, it would undoubtedly be my mother’s bitter vegetable pork porridge. This dish stands out as the most flavourful and nutritious option, making it a convenient choice for a satisfying meal – one that can be enjoyed with just a bowl and a spoon, making it easy to savour multiple servings.”

“Many Singaporeans and foreigners may not realise that, despite being a warm climate island, Singapore boasts its own unique seasons that showcase the changing colours of the landscape,” Edmond points out.

“One such enchanting place is Katong-Joo Chiat, home to native plants like the Mempat trees, which bloom with magical and elegant pink flowers in the months of February and August. During the right season, our streets are transformed into a sea of pink.

“In the early days of Singapore’s independence, our founding leader, the late Lee Kuan Yew, planted a Mempat tree to commemorate our nation’s freedom and express the vision of creating a garden city in the heart of Southeast Asia. These plants hold special significance for our island, extending beyond mere heritage. They symbolise our independence and the collective efforts to build a multicultural society founded on the principles of acceptance.”

“In an old town such as Katong-Joo Chiat, transportation poses a considerable challenge, even for locals eager to explore our neighbourhood. However, a notable advantage of our area is that numerous pre-war buildings feature pavements with built-in shelters. This means that, even under the scorching sun, individuals can comfortably navigate through shaded areas while exploring around.”

“My grandmother left behind not only a culinary legacy, but also enduring values and traditions that are worth passing down through generations. Despite lacking formal education, the stories and traditions inherited from her Peranakan heritage continue to resonate with our entire family. Former neighbours frequently return to our old shop along 60 Joo Chiat Place to reminisce about her cheerful and helpful personality.

“In the early days of Singapore’s independence, significant strides were made by the first batch of political leaders to shape the foundations of modern Singapore. My grandmother, a Nyonya, reaped the benefits when a Member of Parliament named Dr Fong Kim Heng assisted her in obtaining a bank loan to acquire a shophouse in the heart of Katong-Joo Chiat. In her earlier years, my grandmother had struggled to make ends meet, selling Nyonya rice dumplings under a banyan tree at the cross junction of Joo Chiat Place and Everitt Road, alongside her maternal grandmother. With Dr Fong’s help, my family was able to escape poverty and build a livelihood based on the culinary skills passed down from my great-great-grandmother.

“My grandmother instilled in us the understanding that, within our capacity, we should continue to assist those in need. She emphasised the importance of giving back, as our family had received help during our toughest times.

“While I am tempted to single out my grandmother as my favourite person, I must acknowledge that the community and the memories that shaped us into who we are today hold immense value. They are an integral part of our identity as a family.”

“These days, as a parent, much of my time is dedicated to my children. Much like how my grandmother shared stories from our past, I also find significance in imparting such narratives and experiences to my children. I hope that, during their life journeys, they will come to appreciate that memories are crafted in the present and, in their rightful time, will provide moments to reminisce.”

But what about heritage trails?

Well, here’s your chance to try one: the “refreshed” Ang Mo Kio Heritage Trail in Singapore is waiting for you with its three memorable routes and new sites.

It’s a nice way to spend the day and learn more about the area – an educational and relaxing kind of exercise and outdoor jaunt, if you will. And if you’re a tourist, it’s a worthy item to add to your itinerary outside of Singapore’s popular landmarks.

But don’t just take my word for it: I was able to ask Tan Jeng Woon, the Education and Community Outreach manager of the National Heritage Board (NHB), about the heritage trail, and it’s interesting to hear her thoughts on why it’s a must-visit.

What makes a trail a heritage trail?

If you’re still fuzzy about heritage trails, Jeng Woon tells us more.

“Heritage is found in our everyday spaces, whether it’s our favourite childhood playground, the long-established shops we frequent, or the iconic buildings in our neighbourhoods,” she says.

“A heritage trail is more than just a physical route around the well-known and hidden gems in a town. It tells the unique stories of each neighbourhood as experienced by past and present residents, and captures the essence and memories of the community.”

So to recap, you’ll be excited to find:

#1 Interesting people

“Trail-goers can expect to discover many different aspects of each neighbourhood through the perspectives of people from different walks of life, cultural backgrounds and faiths,” Jeng Woon notes.

#2 Distinct landmarks

“The heritage sites in each trail have been selected for their historical, social and cultural significance to the community,” she adds.

“Trail-goers can look forward to finding out more about these locations as well as the lesser-known stories of the town.”

#3 Stories

“Our trails tell stories about our neighbourhoods and communities that not many may have heard of before, and some of these may surprise even those who’ve lived in an area for a long time,” she observes.

“They are also important components of Singapore’s history, and together with well-known national events and stories, they help present a more complete picture of our nation’s journey so far.”

The best stops along the Ang Mo Kio Heritage Trail

Now that you know what a heritage trail is, here’s what makes the Ang Mo Kio one unique. And they happen to be Jeng Woon’s favourites too.

“Heritage trails have been designed to be self-guided and free-for-all, so everyone can explore them whenever they want to,” she says.

#1 Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club

“It’s Singapore’s largest bird singing and display arena,” Jeng Woon points out.

“The club has an interesting history dating back to the 1970s, when it was established by three zebra dove enthusiasts living in Ang Mo Kio. In 1987, they applied to erect poles to allow more enthusiasts to join them. Today, the venue can house more than 1,000 cages and draws bird keepers and enthusiasts from all over Singapore.

“It is great that the passion of three Ang Mo Kio residents has grown to reach enthusiasts from all over the nation, bringing them together through a shared hobby. It is also quite a sight on weekends when everyone gathers and raises their bird cages on the poles!”

#2 Block 259

“Block 259 is affectionately known to residents as the ‘Clover Block’ for its resemblance to the plant when viewed from above,” Jeng Woon explains.

“It stands as the first and only block of circular HDB flats in Singapore, built as part of a pilot programme to construct seven distinctively designed public housing blocks. This building holds a special place in Ang Mo Kio as it broke the monotony of public housing architecture then, and helped to nurture a stronger sense of identity for the town.

“Today, Block 259 has evolved to become an icon of Ang Mo Kio. I think the effort to make our public housing look unique is quite inspiring, and even more so because this started four decades ago!”

#3 Surprise yourself

Why not choose a spot along the way that’s special to you?

“Some of my most memorable experiences on heritage trails include getting to speak to members of the community at various heritage sites along the trail, especially those at religious institutions or at interest clubs. These members of the community usually have memories to share, and their stories and experiences are what bring the heritage site to life,” Jeng Woon recalls.

“One such example was when I visited Ang Mo Kio Joint Temple. One of the temples housed within the joint temple building, Kim Eang Tong, has a full heritage gallery with artefacts that have been used by generations of members of the temple. They brought us on a tour of the gallery and explained how each artefact is still used by the temple members today during rituals and festivals, and how some members have been part of the temple’s history since the kampong days. It was refreshing and heartening to see how such places are taking active steps to safeguarding their history and heritage.”

How to enjoy the Ang Mo Kio Heritage Trail

Or how to enjoy it further, since we already have the stops Jeng Woon recommended we watch out for. She breaks down her tips into three parts: before, during and after you go through the trail.

• Before: Get the guide and map

“The first thing to do is download a digital copy of our companion guide and map through NHB’s heritage portal Roots.gov.sg. The guide covers all the stories of the trail and all the new research and interesting facts we’ve uncovered, and the map will help you plan your journey to discover the different sites.

“We’ve curated three thematic routes exploring different aspects of Ang Mo Kio’s heritage – Iconic Landmarks, Hidden Heartland Gems, and Scenic Fringes – which trail-goers can embark on in their own time and according to their interests. You may also simply personalise your own route to suit your preferences.”

• During: Cover up

“During the trail, do wear comfortable attire and shoes for walking. It’s also a good idea to bring along sunscreen and an umbrella to beat the weather!”

• After: Eat

“You may want to end your exploring with a nice cold drink and a meal at one of Ang Mo Kio’s many establishments serving local favourites, like the S-11 coffee shop at Ang Mo Kio Central, or at heritage businesses such as The Pine Garden, a popular heartland bakery operating in Ang Mo Kio since 1984.”

• Bonus: Take some souvenirs

They’re something to remember the trail by, and they don’t necessarily have to be physical objects.

“There are a few ‘souvenirs’ one can take by going on the trail,” Jeng Woon says.

“The view of the Town Centre from the top of Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East gives trail-goers a good idea of the how far the town has come in terms of new town achievements. There are also a few long-standing businesses that trail-goers can visit to experience a bit of Ang Mo Kio’s kampong history, such as Ban Nee Chen Nursery, Gim Tim Restaurant and Plum Village.

“We hope that trail-goers will gain a deeper understanding of Ang Mo Kio’s history and heritage, and appreciate its transformation from a rural area to the bustling, modern town it is now. We also hope that residents will gain a greater sense of pride and belonging in their neighbourhood.”

“Besides the Ang Mo Kio Heritage Trail, we also have 22 other heritage trails to explore, which include a round-island World War II Heritage Trail too,” Jeng Woon suggests.

“Some of my recommendations are the Orchard and Sentosa Heritage Trails, which will let trail-goers gain new perspectives on these well-loved locations, or the Woodlands and Sembawang Heritage Trails, to explore some less well-known parts of the island. More information can be found here.”

I don’t just go for movies, though; I’m open to series and theatre productions as well. So it’s cool to discover that the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) will be staging 2:22 – A Ghost Story beginning 15th August 2023.

2:22 – A Ghost Story by writer Danny Robins premiered at the West End in 2021, and has been playing in different venues across the UK.

It’s about a couple – one convinced that their new house is haunted while the other doubts it – who’s about to find out (along with their two dinner guests) if there really is something sinister and supernatural going on when the clock strikes at (yes, you guessed it) 2:22.

It’s won awards and gotten a lot of praise, and for good reason. If, like me, you like horror or thrillers, these are just some of the elements about 2:22 – A Ghost Story that I think will excite you.

The thrill of 2:22 – A Ghost Story

#1 There’s humour in it

Daniel Jenkins, SRT deputy artistic director and director of 2:22 – A Ghost Story, shares what it’s like to prepare for it.

“It’s a wonderful script and I have a great cast, so it’s been great fun working out how we were going to tell the story, build the tension, and create the ghostly magic that happens on stage. The play is also very funny, so we’ve had lots of laughs along the way.”

#2 Their strategies to make the audience scared, riveted and in suspense works

And they work well.

“Theatres are atmospheric places, filled with the memories of past productions, actors and audiences, so I think they can intrinsically have a slightly unnerving, exciting feeling, although fear is something we rarely feel when watching a show,” says Daniel.

“There are several tactics the play uses to try and build the tension, from the obvious jump scares to the slow building of tension as the clock clicks down to 2:22. There’s also lots of humour to help relieve the tension, as well as tricking the audience into relaxing, before hitting them with a spooky surprise!

“I think we all like being scared a little, and feeling our endorphins rise within the knowledge that we are in a safe environment and not actually in any real danger is very appealing,” he observes.

#3 There’s a scene that you need to watch out for

Daniel reveals it as… the one with the séance.

“It’s one of my favourites,” he admits. “Not only does it build the tension and suspense brilliantly, it also has some magical theatrical surprises that will hopefully shock and surprise our audience.

“And, of course, the twist at the end is a satisfying and scary shock.” (Brilliant – now we’re all left hanging! All the more reason to watch the show.)

#4 There’s a hidden message and lesson

Not just in 2:22 – A Ghost Story in particular, but in ghost stories in general. 

“2:22 – A Ghost Story doesn’t provide any clear answers on whether or not ghosts actually exist; rather it opens the door to debate and discussion,” says Daniel.

“The belief that there’s something beyond our understanding, something beyond death, a way for those who have passed to revisit us and interact with our world, can be powerful, terrifying and deeply moving. In the chaotic world we live in, we may search for meaning, structure, and an understanding and explanation of human existence. Paranormal or supernatural phenomena may help to provide that.

“The belief that there must be something beyond death is very appealing. And maybe we all need a little of the unknown in our lives. If everything can be explained away with science, then the mystery and magic will be lost.”

#6 The way it’s told and presented matters

Daniel has some tips for reading, choosing and surviving ghost stories too.

• Atmosphere and mood are everything

“Creating the best environment is vital to gain the audience’s attention and ensuring that their focus is only on you and the story. The right location, time and lighting can really aid in creating a spooky atmosphere,” he explains.

• Use elements of reality

“You also need to choose a story that’s grounded in truth, something that appears true and is accessible to the listener – a story that they can relate to either through experience or location.”

• Inject every bit of thought and emotion into it

“Telling the story with conviction, belief and intensity, really taking it very seriously, will allow the listeners’ imagination to really take hold as they begin to believe they see shapes in shadows, hear ghostly noises, or even feel spectral hands upon them. Do it right and you'll give your friends an unforgettable and unique evening’s entertainment. Just don't ask if they had to sleep with the lights on afterwards.”

Finally: What happens at 2:22?

“I think our audiences should come expecting an entertaining and exciting night at the theatre. It really is a genre that we rarely see on stage so if we can create the right atmosphere of anticipation, audiences will be in for a great night out,” he says.

“But don’t worry – the play isn’t a horror, or too scary. It’s more of a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the clock ticks down to 2:22, and the final twists and turns are revealed.

“Everyone at SRT has worked so hard to create this production and I’m so excited to share this story with a Singaporean audience.”

Do you have to believe in ghosts (or at least the possibility they exist) to enjoy 2:22 – A Ghost Story?

Not necessarily. In fact, when Daniel hears the term “ghost story”, what comes to mind?

“I’m a huge sceptic when it comes to ghosts; however, I do like a good ghost story,” he answers.

“When I think of a ghost story, I imagine something that will excite, entertain and keep me on the edge of my seat with a few twists, turns and surprises along the way!”

A lot of us probably feel the same. Do we agree with the kind of ghost stories (or movies or shows) that Daniel loves too?

“Surprisingly, I’m not a huge lover of jump-scare horror. I prefer something that’s a little more nuanced and thriller-like,” he says.

“I have a very vivid imagination, so it really doesn’t take much for me to be overthinking and imagining all sorts of ghostly scenarios. Despite this, the thrill that one gets from being scared and the expectation ghost stories can bring are very appealing.”

All-time favourite ghost stories: What would you recommend?

To prepare you for 2:22 – A Ghost Story in Singapore – and inspire you to pursue other thrillers afterwards – Daniel has a few suggestions.

#1 The Ring (the Japanese version)

“One of the scariest movies I watched that terrified me and stayed with me for weeks after was the original Japanese version of The Ring! I haven’t been in Asia long at that time, so I was unfamiliar with Asian horror. I found the film’s imagery, sound effects and, of course, the Pontianak-like ghost, terrifying!

“I always find the more mundane ghost stories the most effective, ones that I can relate to, in domestic settings with ordinary people. As an actor and director with a vivid imagination, I enjoy placing myself in the story and imagining what it would be like if these things actually happened.”

#2 Monsters Don’t Eat Children by Rita Riebel Mitchell

“I’m also a fan of short fiction, and some of the most effective scary stories can be the most succinct and effective. One of my favourites is Monsters Don’t Eat Children.” It’s a quick and enjoyable read! Click here.

Don’t know what “Peranakan” means, or what Peranakan culture is all about? Good thing we have Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum assistant curator Diane Chee to give us a brief introduction.

“Many people may not be aware that in Malay, ‘Peranakan’ has ‘anak’ or ‘child’ at its root, and means ‘locally born’,” she says.

“The term ‘Peranakan’ suggests someone who is locally born but has heritage from somewhere else – a mixture of cultures.

“Today, ‘Peranakan’ has taken on the status of cultural identity and refers to a range of mixed heritage communities,” she adds.

“Their unifying trait is the melding of ancestral cultures – Chinese, Indian, Arab, European and others – with the indigenous cultures of the Malay-Indonesian archipelago. Many names exist to refer to this array of cross-cultural combinations, including Chinese Peranakans, Chitty Melakans or Indian Peranakans, as well as Jawi and Arab Peranakans.

“Peranakan communities thus speak to the sort of cultural diversity and mixing inherent in Southeast Asian port cities such as Singapore. The Peranakan culture is a living and dynamic one that continues to evolve even today.”

And that’s just the beginning. You need to visit the museum to learn more (of course).

A virtual tour of sorts

Or more like a personal guide. If you can’t go to the Peranakan Museum just yet, Diane offers us a few teasers. She does this by revealing some of her favourite pieces, areas and tips.

Considering the museum has three floors and nine galleries that are all pretty much close to her heart, this is no mean feat.

“In the refreshed museum, visitors will get to find out more about Peranakan life through themes related to Origins, Home and Style as aspects of Peranakan identity,” she says.

“With a display of over 800 objects, ranging from newly acquired or generously donated objects to well-loved artefacts and set pieces, it’s difficult to choose. But if I had to, these artefacts would be my top picks.”

Can you spot them during your visit? (You can make it like a scavenger hunt for fun.)

Part I: Diane’s favourite pieces at the Peranakan Museum

#1 Portrait of Lie Pa-toe Nio

“In the Origins Gallery on Level One, visitors will be introduced to the diverse origins and evolution of Peranakan communities,” Diane explains.

“From hand-coloured photographs to photo walls, you will encounter portraits of past and present-day Peranakans. Contributed by various Peranakan communities, they show the diversity and richness of Peranakan cultural heritage.

“This gallery also features video interviews, where respondents share their thoughts and reflections on what ‘Peranakan’ means to them.”

#2 Group of monogrammed European tableware from an Arab Peranakan family, and Tok Panjang: Dinner service with the surname “Yap”

Look for the teapot, plate and goblet with the monogram of Syed Abdul Rahman bin Taha Alsagoff, aka Engku Aman (1836-1955), and this particular dinner service and set installation.

“Galleries on the second floor present objects related to family and community life, revealing a range of Peranakan customs, foods, languages and beliefs,” Diane describes.

“The galleries reunite furniture, portraits and furnishings that once shared the same home, in a new method of display that focuses on historical houses and architecture, many of which have since been demolished and are survived by the objects on view.

“The gallery dedicated to ceramics and food culture presents a refreshing take on the ceramics used by Peranakans and their diverse food culture. It features a floor-to-ceiling display of some of the best and rarest examples of Peranakan ‘nyonyaware’, as well as other types of ceramics used in Peranakan households.”

#3 Sarong kebaya costume and a necklace (addigai)

“Unified by the theme of Style, the third floor galleries feature an extensive collection of materials, from batik to needlework and jewellery to fashion,” she states.

“A wide range of fashion is displayed beyond the iconic sarong kebaya, including menswear, footwear, bags and accessories. With over 130 objects on display, the Fashion Gallery also highlights contemporary expressions to demonstrate how fashion of the Peranakans is diverse, reflects hybrid influences, and evolved over centuries.

“Likewise, the newly dedicated Jewellery Gallery presents more than 180 pieces of jewellery across various stages of life and occasions, tracing its chronological development and evolution in response to changing dress fashions and hybrid influences.”

But that’s not all

Which parts of the museum did Diane find herself spending the most time in, because she was so immersed and interested in them?

I ask this because this happens to me a lot. I can’t seem to move from one area because I have so many questions swirling in my head.

Are you the same? Diane goes on to share her favourite stops and the reasons behind them.

Part II: Diane’s favourite areas at the Peranakan Museum

#1 The Origins Gallery

“Visitors are invited to trace the roots and routes that our diverse Peranakan communities took through an interactive display, and listen to 20 personal stories from Peranakan families who share what being Peranakan means to them,” Diane says.

“There are approximately 300 photographs of which 100 are on loan from Peranakan individuals, families and community groups. It was an honour to get to know them through the process of selecting images for display, and it was truly moving to be with them when they saw their family photographs in the gallery. There were more than a few tears!

“Our lenders welcomed us into their homes, shared their stories, and in true Peranakan fashion they very often fed us as well. I remember in particular a wonderful Chitty Melaka feast where we met a large Indian Peranakan family, snacked on homemade Apom Berkuah at the Gunong Sayang Association HQ in Marine Parade, and had addictive prawn sambal sandwiches at the home of one of our Eurasian lenders.”

#2 The Ceramics and Food Culture Gallery

Who can step away from anything related to food?

“At this gallery, we complement exquisite nyonyaware and other ceramics used in the homes of Peranakan families with videos celebrating Peranakan taste and cooking,” Diane says.

“Visitors can learn more about the customs and traditions of different Peranakan families through the dinnerware they use as well as their diverse food culture, as we introduce recipes such as Babi Buah Keluak, which is a favourite of Chinese Peranakan cook Malcolm Lee. Another dish that is featured is Lauk Pindang, which is demonstrated by Indian Peranakan cook Tanya Pillay-Nair.”

#3 Art by Sam Lo and Lavender Chang

“In recognition of the relevance of Peranakan culture and identity today, the museum commissioned artworks from contemporary artists Sam Lo and Lavender Chang,” Diane continues.

“I’ve had the pleasure to work with Sam Lo on their art installation Coming Home, which serves as a homecoming to welcome and celebrate the lives of generations of Peranakans, both near and far, in an effort to evoke feelings of pride and unity in the community. Working with Sam was a wonderfully collaborative process. Their clear vision and deep interest in Peranakan heritage was coupled with an openness as to what would work best in the space both from an artistic and technical perspective.

“The air well is not an easy spot in which to mount a complicated artwork and I thank Sam, their contractor Sean, and my exhibitions and estates colleagues for the wonderful end result.”

More than ready

If you haven’t noticed it by now, Diane believes the objects matter because of the stories attached to them.

And it doesn’t end there. “We were lucky to meet so many community members while curating the galleries, and their stories are what stay in our minds as we choose objects for display,” she admits.

“The journey continues now that we have opened the galleries. We were recently fortunate enough to meet members of the Tan family, who provided valuable oral history regarding the Tan Kim Seng ancestral altar which is displayed on Level Two.”

Since she’s properly primed us for a future visit, she gives us a couple of tips to maximise it.

Part III: Diane’s favourite tips for exploring the Peranakan Museum

#1 Keep an open mind

“It allows us to develop a greater appreciation of other cultures and communities, and broadens our perspective of the world,” she says.

“Even with the diversity of Peranakan cultures, we get the sense that we’re more alike than different. This is especially so after my experience working closely with the various Peranakan communities and associations for the refreshed museum.

“It is also inspiring to see how the Peranakan story is a port city story that is integral to Singapore, and how this still resonates with us living in this modern world.”

#2 Start from the bottom and work your way up

“I’d say not to miss the Origins Gallery on the ground floor, and then to follow the flow upwards to the third floor.”

#3 Set aside at least half a day

“Take your time to truly immerse yourself in the museum experience,” she urges.

“There’s so much to see and it’s important not to rush through the galleries to take in the wonderful and intricate details of each and every artefact displayed, as well as to explore the many layers and aspects of Peranakan identity.”

But then you’re always welcome to stay longer. (If you’re like me, you probably will.)

#1 It’s okay to read every caption

Or sign, or plaque. I do. I always want to know the background of a particular piece. It makes me imagine what it was like back then.

(Just don’t take up too much space and stop other people from reading them.)

#2 Find a seat

And stare at the images. It’s like taking a break – an insightful and inspiring one, that is.

#3 Talk to the staff

I find that some usually roam around and are happy to answer questions and chat. At least those who I’ve come across do.

#4 Take pictures

If it’s allowed. I find that they can inspire you when you’re feeling creative (or even when you’re not) – like if you want to redecorate your room or organise your desk. The shapes, the colours, the details… they make great starting points for projects.

Or you can look to “if” as a source of inspiration. I would.

I got this idea from the 2022 Singapore Writers Festival (SWF). Their theme for this year – their 25th edition – is “if”. It does present a lot of possibilities.

And in their case, the possibilities were endless. If only they could have three weekends bookended instead of two; have their first-ever Festival Village (where you can expect food, drinks, live music and poetry readings at the Civic District); and have past festival directors involved this year to liven things up…

Well, it’s happening. Or is about to happen. Together with festival director Pooja Nansi (who is the one informing us of all of the above), that is, they’re making it happen.

The festival will be held from 4 to 20 November 2022 across different venues in Singapore, and there will be over 200 programmes. They include workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances and more, featuring local and international authors, and other literary personalities.

If Pooja could go back in time to past SWFs, what would she like to change, add, revisit or experience once again – and why?

“I would love to experience the 2019 festival again, knowing what I know now about how chaotic running an event of this scale could be,” she admits.

“It was my first year, and knowing what I know now, I think I would be able to let go a little bit more and enjoy the months of work the team and I had spent putting this together.”

Still on “if”

If Pooja could also share some tips for coming up with a theme for a festival or event, what would they be? She says:

“I highly recommend festival goers, especially those joining us for the first time, to get the Festival Pass to gain access to over 80 per cent of our programmes at any time during the festival,” she says.

“The Festival Pass is a great way to explore sure-hit programmes you resonate with, but also encounter the unexpected – so I’d usually encourage people to find something that resonates with them but also wander into programmes you usually would not walk into as you never know what you might discover!

“Attend conversations and meet-the-author sessions, join in workshops and masterclasses, participate in our immersive Festival Key Installation, dive into multilingual titles at our Festival Bookstore, and soak in the festive vibes with some F&B at our Festival Village overlooking the bay.

“There is so much to experience even if you’re spending just one day at SWF (though we really hope to see you more!)”

#2 Check out their signature programmes

“With this year’s diverse and innovative programmes and formats featuring the powerhouse lineup of local and international talents, you may also explore the festival through our signature programme tracks like SWF Playground, which is aimed at young readers and writers under the age of 12; Youth Fringe, with its programmes for ages 13 to 25, or for the young at heart; the Southeast Asian Focus, which looks at what is at the forefront of writing in Southeast Asia; and Country Focus, which makes a grand return with its spotlight on France this year.”

#3 Enjoy it for free

“Do also join in the free-for-all programmes at The Arts House, such as our Literary Pioneer exhibition and the Key Festival Installation, ‘If We Paused in Mid Thought’ – and even at libraries across the island as SWF 2022 presents ‘25 Programmes in 25 Libraries’ in partnership with the National Library Board,” she concludes.

We’re talking about Cambodia here, and contemporary Cambodian art.

If you happen to be in the country (or thinking of travelling there), Claire Taddei, the manager of Ikigai Arts Center in Phnom Penh, points us to a couple of artists who she thinks would be a good start.

“In my opinion, art should only be disturbing. It should express intensity, emotions and the poetry of life. It should reconnect us with spirituality,” she says.

These artists, she adds, “resonates with my way of expressing and showcasing art”. Let’s take a look.

#1 Chankrim Mil

“The painter has a figurative approach, and he makes me think of Egon Schiele sometimes. I especially like his human shapes with their expressive lines, rather than his landscapes. His expressing tormented beings highlights a darkness that’s essentially linked to Cambodia’s recent history. I like it because it's intense, full of emotions, and disturbing.” 

#2 Shanghai Chang

“A conceptual artist, he is unclassifiable. Everything he is proposing (fashion, installations, multimedia) is unexpected, surprising, and out of any kind of boxes. He has a very unique personality, point of view, and therefore creativity. For me, he represents the contemporary Cambodian artist, someone who thinks through his Cambodian heritage, codes and languages... and twists them in a mind-blowing way.”

#3 Ryysa

“The painter’s work is inspired by this search for identity, coming from a generation of Cambodians who grew up abroad but are coming back to their roots. His artworks are poetic, soft and aerial, and he plays with his Fine Arts background in a very original way.” 

#4 Tytaart

“I love this photographer’s position more than the artworks themselves. She represents a very strong and blossoming feminine energy, and questions gender in a very free way.” 

If Claire could describe the arts and performance scene in Phnom Penh in one word, it would also be “blossoming”.

“The Cambodian art scene is rebirthing in a unique way. We can notice a flow of Cambodian artists born abroad who are coming back, and mixing the influences by twisting their roots with a contemporary approach,” she says.

“It’s a growing scene where the potential is huge and mind-blowing. However, there is a risk of being Westernised...”

Hold that thought

And try not to jump to conclusions just yet, because there’s one more stop, and that’s Ikigai Arts Center.

Opened in October 2021, it’s the newest artistic hub in Phnom Penh. It has three floors with specially designed spaces to host artists, showcase different art forms, and stage various activities. Visitors will be treated to performances, workshops, exhibitions, community events, a photo studio, an artist residency, a creative lab, a shop and more.

Why this centre, and why now?

“This centre is a creative laboratory where we want to break the barriers between the different art disciplines and practices,” Claire says.

“We want to propose a space where arts, emotions and spirituality are intimately linked. We are in Cambodia – it’s important to us to propose a Cambodian way of proposing art.

“Also, we aim to spread the message that creativity can be everywhere and in anyone.
The artistic and cultural Cambodian scene is blossoming, and it’s time to propose something new.”

There’s that word again, “blossoming”. Their tagline is “Society changes, so does art”, after all.

“It shows the major role of art in society and the non-avoidable movement, taking new forms, new shapes and new expressions,” she states.

“Change is ineluctable. Society grows and we say that society grows thanks to artists. This is a way to speak about art as a political tool.”

Expect lots of changes then

Because nothing really stays the same at the centre, especially since they’ve created four main spaces that allow art forms and any artistic endeavour to develop. You can say it’s the whole point of establishing the centre, and what makes it interesting.

“Each space can be used in very diverse ways. We like to create a flow,” Claire says.

“Each has been made to be flexible and connect with each other, and be used in many different ways: for workshops, projections, talks and performances.”

You can be sure these spaces will be maximised in 2022.

“This centre aims to propose engaging, interactive and immersive art experiences by mixing the different art practices,” she explains.

And as they’ve always stated: “‘Limitless possibilities’ and ‘feeling alive’ are the two goals of this new art space that’s been made for the community to grow, share, laugh, experience and wonder.’

“We want it to be surprising and unexpected in every corner.”

But before you leave

I think you can get inspiration from Ikigai’s spaces, and adopt them into your own homes, routines and lifestyle. Art is about nurturing and encouraging your creativity too.

Here’s what Claire wants you to take away from your visit:

#1 Slow down

#2 Focus on the details in your daily life

#3 Explore manual activities

#4 Be mindful

#5 Create your own creative corner at home, even at work!

It’s also okay if you just want to admire the art

Art needs to be appreciated and stared at for long periods of time. (That’s what I do when I’m at galleries and museums.) Well, at the least the kind of art that makes you think.

It’s what Cambodian art does to Claire. What else does she love about it?

“There is a beautiful, deep and fascinating darkness in Cambodian artistic approaches,” she says.

“There is a big freedom of space where we can really explore the essential spiritual or meditative side of art.”

That’s a good “effect” of art, and a good reason to check out Cambodian art during your stay, don’t you think?

And if you’re too busy and in a hurry, you probably just pass them by and don’t give them a second thought.

Well, not if you’re a fan of great design and architecture – and not if you’re looking at a Zaha Hadid/Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) creation.

Although the award-winning architect is no longer with us (she passed away in 2016), Zaha’s work and influence live on through these impressive structures; through ZHA, which is constantly evolving and taking things many steps further; and through exhibits like “Zaha Hadid Architects: Vertical Urbanism” at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) Gallery on King Ling Road. You can check it out virtually here. It opened in January and was supposed to end in early April, but it has now been extended until 01 May 2022.

The exhibit features architectural models, video projections, technical drawings and more to highlight ZHA’s design and thought process, research methods, philosophy and vision.

Of course, they all look pretty cool.

And if you’re an architect yourself, like Henry Chan, the Higher Diploma in Architectural Design Programme leader at HKDI, holding this kind of exhibit – and seeing all these pieces together in one place – is an exciting prospect.

It takes you down memory lane too.

“As an architect who has practised for over 15 years, the exhibit is very interesting. We see the process and variety in the design concepts and development of high-rise buildings,” he says.

“From my personal experience, designing a high-rise building and for it to not only be iconic is very difficult to achieve. High-rises are easy to form or design, but it’s difficult to successfully achieve a sensible relationship with their users; as such, buildings are so out of the human scale.

“I worked on numerous skyscrapers locally in Hong Kong, and also throughout China, UAE and Singapore. It’s always inspiring to look at the innovation of ZHA’s high-rise designs, and see that there are no boundaries to the form, tectonics and engineering of tall buildings. High-rise buildings are often considered as non-contextual, but there is always something unique and specific to ZHA’s designs.

“It’s refreshing to see this kind of endeavour to achieve something more than the typical in our overly commercial world.”

That’s true. Here’s what else we think you’ll love about the displays.

#1 The stories behind the projects are equally compelling

They will pull you in, design buff or no.

“The section about ZHA Code, in particular, demonstrates the research and development in design, which shows not only the product (the building) but the processes behind it. This is valuable to students and even practitioners,” Henry points out.

“Also, what has made Zaha’s work so unique is how the story of each design is told through representation, in models and in drawings. The large drawing of The Peak Leisure Club will always have a place in the hearts of many locals of Hong Kong.” 

#2 An understanding of vertical urbanism

“As more and more people live in cities as opposed to rural areas, urban environments become tighter and denser. We only have so much land to build on, so the only way to expand our cities is to go vertical,” he says.

“Vertical urbanism is not a new concept, especially after the rapid developments throughout the world in the last century. It’s less about the act of building vertically, but rather the innovative solutions and the responses to how the current social, economic, environmental, political and commercial conditions influence density – and how architecture and city planning can proactively provide responses to sustain or create better living conditions for the future.

“With all the problems the world has to face, innovating and mitigating is critical for the future development of our cities.”

How to apply the principles and concepts of vertical urbanism in our own lives

I’m interested in this. I’ve been watching a couple of home and design shows, and they leave me wanting and looking for more.

Henry has this to say:

#1 It’s not just about height

“It’s important to not equate vertical urbanism with taller buildings being greater,” he observes.

“Cities should not only look at how we construct vertical environments to mitigate issues with density. Community developments and social interaction, whether physical or virtual, is essential, and we shall innovate and find new ways to connect our communities through architecture.”

#2 Stop, compare and analyse

“As an average person, we can also look at our cities from different perspectives. We get so caught up in our everyday lives and we often miss out on opportunities to just observe our surroundings.

“Through simple observations and simple recordings, we can get a lot of insights about how our buildings, our neighbourhoods, our communities and our cities are functioning. We can see how some parts of our cities are well developed, balancing top-down policies and bottom-up community initiatives, versus some districts which are overpopulated, without any sense of community or coherence.

“There are actually a lot of social awareness groups we can get involved in to help initiate or sustain the discourses in our city’s future developments.”

The potential

So why this post? The exhibit will only run for a relatively short time, and some of you might only get to read this when it’s already done. Will it still have its uses then?

The answer is yes. I feel like it invites us to read and discover more about design and architecture, its effects, and how structures aren’t just supposed to be pretty or imposing. (Although that helps.)

The questions that come to mind include: How do I/you/we want to live and spend our time? What kind of space will make us thrive? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially with the pandemic.

How has the pandemic or the past few years changed the way you think about being indoors and outdoors? About high-rises, layouts, functionality, location, height, privacy, people, sustainability, the environment? The ideas of home, public space and workplace? What works for you and for the good of everyone – and what doesn’t? Do we have a choice? Yikes.

Hopefully exhibits like these serve as an inspiration to others, and we will get the designs our respective communities need – and soon.

Have you ever seen Jason and the Argonauts – the 1963 film by special effects and stop-motion animation pioneer Ray Harryhausen? No? Well, you should.

I know I watched it as a kid, but I was recently able to do it again (and again) through an old-movie channel on TV. That and Clash of the Titans, another Ray Harryhausen classic, which came out in 1981.

I find these films so fascinating and satisfying, first because they’re great and familiar stories, and second because of the vibe and feel – if that makes any sense?

And of course, the best thing about them are the creatures – Talos and the skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts, and Medusa and the Kraken in Clash of the Titans, just to name a few. They’re just so cool and memorable, and they certainly make an impression. Ray inspired filmmakers like Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, you know. 😊

A master

Ray created armatures, models (and armatured models), artworks, miniatures, moulds, and so much more. In fact, The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation believes there are over 50,000 items in Ray’s collection. You can trace Ray’s career back to the 1950s, after all, when Mighty Joe Young was released.

Sadly, Ray passed away in 2013, but his memory and influence live on. The foundation has organised a series of exhibitions and different events to celebrate Ray’s 100th birthday in 2020, #Harryhausen100. If you’re lucky and you’re in Scotland (I’m not), you can check out the exhibition “Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema” at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern Two) in Edinburgh until 20 February 2022.

I thought it’d be amazing if I could feature them and get their thoughts about Ray and his work. I’d love to know more. I reached out to them, and yay!

We have Vanessa Harryhausen, John Walsh and Connor Heaney here. Vanessa is Ray’s daughter and a trustee of the foundation; she also wrote the book Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema.

John is a BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, the founder of film production company Walsh Bros Ltd, author of Harryhausen: The Lost Movies, and a trustee as well.

Connor is the foundation’s collections manager, the one in charge of cataloguing, preserving and promoting Ray’s work and legacy.

They reveal their favourites below – the experiences, the emotions, and the pieces that resonated with them the most (because there are understandably a lot). Visit a Ray Harryhausen exhibition and you’re bound to have your own favourites too. So when will you?

What do you personally see and how do you feel when you look at the exhibition?

Connor: “The ‘Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema’ exhibition is testament to an incredible life of creativity, persistence and inspiration.

“Ray was a legendary 20th century filmmaker, responsible for the special effects in such classic movies as Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, One Million Years B.C. and more. As well as being responsible for the iconic stop-motion animation in all of his films, Ray would also create concept art, design and build his creatures, and then have the film’s live action structured around his creations. As such, the finished picture was truly a result of Ray’s fantastical visions.

“Thankfully, Ray would never throw anything away throughout his long career, and kept hundreds of stop-motion models alongside thousands of artworks, tools, model-making equipment and more.

“At The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, we have the privilege of caring for Ray’s physical collection, and are responsible for promoting Ray’s ongoing legacy. June 2020 marked Ray’s 100th birthday, and so for a number of years we had planned to celebrate his life and work on this landmark centenary date.”

Which elements played a role in mounting the exhibition? And which of them stand out to you?

Connor: “In the years prior to 2020, we had planned for a major exhibition to celebrate Ray’s incredible legacy. Having spoken to a number of institutions worldwide, I was invited to meet with Simon Groom, director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

“After an initial conversation about Ray’s films, animation and creative works, Simon recognised Ray’s status as a true modern artist, and we agreed to collaborate on a major exhibition in Edinburgh. From that point onwards, our plans grew and grew, until it became clear that the entirety of the seven-room Modern Two building would be required to tell the story of Ray’s life and work.”

Connor relays some of the challenges they had to face, as well as some of the decisions they had to make:

#1 Figuring out the best way to present Ray’s collection

Because it was extensive – like very – which can be a good but tricky thing.

“The exhibition spans Ray’s life, and showcases objects from his earliest days as a young filmmaker in the 1930s, through to projects he was working upon less than a decade ago before his sad passing in 2013.

“There are several hundred models, artworks, photographs, tools and personal artefacts on display – however, with a collection spanning a century and consisting of some 50,000 items, one of the biggest challenges is to narrow down an object list which is representative of all of his work, as well as telling the story of his creative life.

“We worked hard with the team at the gallery to create a display which showed how those first creative sparks were developed across the decades, and how Ray’s imagination was brought to life through his innovative and ingenious techniques.”

#2 Preserving Ray’s models so we can enjoy them for a long time

“Another challenge was the condition of many of Ray’s original stop-motion models. These were cared for by Ray throughout his life, and displayed proudly in his home. However, these models were primarily constructed from latex, which is an organic material that deteriorates over time. Ray recognised this issue in his lifetime, and hired special effects artist Alan Friswell to repair some of his most damaged models.

“Alongside this, the two spent many hours discussing the best approach to this conservation – what materials should be used, how far to intervene with damaged models, and how the finished piece should look. It was Ray’s hope that his models could look as close to their original screen-used image as possible, and that future generations could continue to enjoy and learn from his creations.

“Thankfully, Alan still works closely with the foundation, and was able to assess, and where appropriate repair, every model on display at the ‘Titan of Cinema’ exhibition. Many of Ray’s most iconic creatures, including Talos, Kali, Gwangi and the Kraken, would simply have been too damaged or fragile to exhibit had Alan not intervened.”

What are your favourite pieces from the exhibition?

This is my favourite part. If you’re new to Ray’s work, you can start here, and watch out for them at their exhibitions. But I’m pretty sure a lot of fans will flock to these items too.

#1 Skeleton from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

Connor: “For many people, the name Ray Harryhausen instantly conjures up imagery of his legendary stop-motion skeleton models. These can be seen in two of his films, most famously as the seven ‘Children of the Hydra’s Teeth’ in the legendary climax of Jason and the Argonauts. A single skeleton warrior was also seen in 1958’s The 7th Voyage of Sinbad; this model was actually reused in Jason, although in the years that followed, Ray would claim that he could not identify which was the older skeleton.

“During assessment of the models, Alan realised that one particular model stood out as the original 1958 model. Thankfully, both the sword and shield from this piece are still contained within our archive, so this iconic piece has been reunited with its original accessories, more than 60 years on!

“This model also represents the oldest ‘complete’ piece from any of Ray’s films – the skeleton models have actually aged very well. Being constructed from cotton wool dipped in liquid latex and then wrapped around a very thin armature, the construction of these pieces ensured minimal deterioration, meaning that they can continue to terrify for generations to come. All of Ray’s surviving skeleton models are on display as part of the ‘Titan of Cinema’ exhibition.”

#2 Talos from Jason and the Argonauts

Connor: “Talos is another of Ray’s most iconic pieces, voted the second greatest movie monster of all time by Empire Magazine (just behind 1933’s King Kong, appropriately enough). This model has deteriorated particularly badly over the years, and there was a question on whether or not the piece could be displayed for Ray’s centenary exhibit. Alan Friswell performed yet another miraculous restoration job which stabilised the model, and which will allow visitors to see this legendary statue up close for years to come.”

#3 Early Kong model

This may not have been included in Ray’s movies, but it’s still definitely worth a mention.

Vanessa: “In 2008, dad asked me to travel to his property in Los Angeles so that I could look through materials that had been held in a storage unit there for decades. He couldn’t remember exactly what had been kept there.

“Upon opening his garage, I was greeted with a treasure trove of material from his early career! Everything from his first models in the 1930s through to pieces from Jason and the Argonauts could be found within the dozens of boxes there. I called upon two of dad’s friends in LA to help assist me work through this material – animators Jim Danforth and Randy Cook were an invaluable help in identifying these lost treasures.

“Amongst this horde of invaluable objects were some of dad’s earliest creations – a series of marionettes built in his early teens, shortly after he first saw King Kong in 1933. These include Skeleton, Robot, Dragon and, of course, Kong himself. When these arrived back in the UK, dad was horrified at how basic these early models had looked. However, I told him that I felt it was important to share these as an example of how he started out. Nobody is born with the skills that he developed over the years – it takes hard work and persistence. These rudimentary marionettes are a reminder of his very first attempts to create from his own imagination.”

#4 Gwangi from The Valley of Gwangi

Vanessa: “I have a direct personal connection to Gwangi the Allosaurus, star of the 1969 cowboys vs dinosaurs classic The Valley of Gwangi. I was present during the live action filming of this picture, as was my mother Diana. Although I was very small, I recall meeting leading lady Gila Golan and being on location in Spain.

“Once dad had finished animating, I remember seeing this model in our home alongside Pinky the Elephant, who met an unfortunate demise in the film! I was lucky enough to play with the models, leading to an amusing incident in Harrods store in London. Mum had taken me shopping, and I had the Gwangi model around in my toy buggy. Two little old ladies stopped me and asked if they could see my dolly.

“When I pulled back the blanket, they were greeted with a snarling dinosaur! The ladies were horrified and scolded my mother, complaining that I wouldn’t grow up to be a normal child with toys like that.

“I didn’t have dolls, I had dinosaurs!”

#5 The Kraken from Clash of the Titans

John: “The Kraken is a majestic titan, and in the exhibition, we get to see the full-sized restored torso version used for the dramatic climax of Ray’s last film, Clash of the Titans. I have always loved this design and how it mirrors the film that started it all for Ray: King Kong in 1933. He came full circle with this final film, and the strength and beauty of this beast is as good a symbol of the creative intellect that was Ray Harryhausen.”

What are some of the things that continuously amaze and surprise you about Ray Harryhausen’s work and legacy?

Vanessa: “Dad was always so humbled and surprised to hear what an impact his films had on a new generation of artists. He was of course delighted to hear how he’d influenced so many filmmakers and fans, and I know he would have been pleased to see the exhibition in Edinburgh. It’s amazing to think that his final film, Clash of the Titans, was released over 40 years ago, yet his legacy is still being celebrated to this day.”

What is it you wish people knew about him, his life and his work?

Vanessa: “In the book I wrote for dad’s centenary (also titled Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema), I tried to get his personality across to anybody who didn’t have the pleasure of meeting him. His humble nature, his dry sense of humour and his self-reliant nature were all very important parts of his personality.

“I hope that my book and the exhibition show what a talented artist and craftsman he was. As well as his incredible animation, he could also create these incredible drawings and sculpt bronzes, and build things around the home when needed.

“Most importantly was my father’s hope that his work could continue to inspire and educate future generations of artists and animators. I hope that his story of persistence and imagination can continue to bring hope to young filmmakers starting out.”

What lessons have you learnt, and what tips can you share, about inspiration and creativity from Ray Harryhausen?

John: “As both a technical innovator and a force of great creative ambition, Ray Harryhausen is a testament to anyone who has dreamt big and seen it through. Today his work is admired by millions and continues to influence those filmmakers looking to the past to create the onscreen successes of the future.

“When I was writing my book, Harryhausen: The Lost Movies, I was continually astonished by his ability to bring fresh and innovative perspectives to ancient stories of mythology and futuristic visions of worlds to come.”

Who knows?

Like John, Vanessa and Connor, you might find yourself endlessly inspired by Ray – so much so that you could go on to create some fantastical creatures of your own (and make movie history too). From the three’s recollections and perceptions of Ray, he would probably love that – and would want to see more of us doing it, and improving on it.

And if you still can’t get enough, Connor says there’s more. “Look out for the inaugural Harryhausen Awards, which launch in 2022,” he tells us. You’ll love the stories and appreciate the context of what’s featured in the exhibition by the time you visit. I would. 🙂

Hopefully I will soon. Or you will. Fingers crossed.

If Northern Thailand is on the cards, here are five things you can look forward to when you get there. I searched for a person to ask and satisfy my curiosity about the area, and Edward E. Snoeks, the general manager of Melia Chiang Mai, happens to be game to share his favourites.

It’s part of my ongoing quest to “travel” while stuck in one place, and to sneak a peek into a local or resident’s take on a destination.

Ready to be transported? (Don’t forget to update yourself on current COVID restrictions and measures first.)

#1 The people

“The people of Northern Thailand are exceptionally friendly and helpful,” he says.

“Previously, I was caught up in the hectic pace of Bangkok, so my first impressions of the people here in Northern Thailand were that they’re very sincere and they make time for you.

“When I first arrived here, a police officer went out of his way to say hello and make me feel very welcome, and that has left a lasting impression on me.”

#2 The hiking trails

“As Chiang Mai is situated in Thailand’s mountainous north, there are plenty of fantastic hiking trails. I love to rise early, about 5:30am each day, and undertake two hikes a week. In fact, I just did a 12km hike this morning; it makes such a huge difference to your day.

“We are spoilt for choice, but I particularly like the Wat Pha Lat Trail, as well as a trail near Chiang Mai University.”

#3 The cuisine

“Although khao soi, an egg noodle curry, is very well known, there’s so much more breadth and depth to the cuisine than khao soi. It’s amazing how many delectable restaurants there are in Chiang Mai – the city is home to a huge concentration of small mom-and-pop stores. For the first six months I lived here, I ate out at least four times a week and never went to the same place twice.”

#4 The climate

“Here in Chiang Mai the climate is perfect. Due to its geographical position, Chiang Mai is much cooler than Bangkok. I am drenched after a five-minute walk as a result of the heat and humidity in Bangkok, but that doesn’t really happen to me here in Chiang Mai.

“In Northern Thailand, we experience a decent winter, a welcome counterpoint to the warmer months. The cool season is a very nice time to visit Chiang Mai.”

#5 The architecture

“Chiang Mai’s historic architecture is enchanting. To see so many temples right in the middle of residential streets is awe-inspiring. The moat still surrounds the Old City and its walls, which are still mostly intact so you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The architecture here is a window into Chiang Mai’s rich history and culture.”

Your digs

The travel and tourism industry took (and is still taking) a hit because of the pandemic, but Melia Chiang Mai will actually be “the first five-star hotel to open in Chiang Mai since the pandemic began”, says Edward. It’s set to open in the fourth quarter of this year.

It’s a positive thing, and visitors can help the local community and economy in the process.

There are other good reasons to go to Northern Thailand and maybe check out the new hotel, even if just for just a tiny bit. It might allow you to tick things off your travel to-do list.

You can also do these wherever you are, if you need a breather.

#1 Have a drink

The hotel’s 360-degree rooftop bar, called Mai The Sky Bar, happens to be Edward’s personal favourite.

It’s on the 22nd floor, and it has two bars you can access thanks to a glass bridge. Enjoy views of the River Ping to the east and the Doi Suthep Temple to the west while you nibble on Spanish tapas.

#2 Have a massage (of course)

Be it a luxurious Thai massage, a scrub, a wrap, a facial or a pedi, their underwater-themed YHI Spa has got you covered – and feeling totally relaxed. They also feature a Thai herbal sauna and wellness products from Thai brand HARNN.

#3 Pause

Depending on where you are in the hotel (or in Chiang Mai, for that matter), you’ll be treated to views of the pool, the city, the river and mountains… and even a secret garden.

Lord knows we all need a reprieve these days, and a place to ourselves.

Since I really can’t go anywhere at the moment, I’ve decided to live vicariously through different people – especially those who are lucky enough to stay in amazing surrounds. One such person is Alma Resort’s managing director, Herbert Laubichler-Pichler.

Opened in 2019, Alma Resort is located in Cam Ranh, Vietnam, and it covers over 30 beachfront hectares in the peninsula. Their suites and pavilions boast beachfront and sea views.

They also have 12 pools and even a waterpark, a 70-seat cinema and outdoor theatre, plus facilities for different sports such as football, tennis, basketball, archery, and more. Guests can dine on fresh seafood by the beach, on Japanese and Italian fare, and on French and Vietnamese dishes at their very own food court.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about my favourite spots for taking stock of things, for being mindful, and for spending some “alone” and “me” time. And again, I’ve been wondering about other people’s as well. I get some inspiration from Herbert here, with some “a day in the life” feels. Maybe you will, too.

(If you’re stuck somewhere or on a budget, I’ve also added in realistic tips that work for me in my own space. Hopefully these are available to you and will work for you, too, or at least offer some respite.)

#1 Anywhere where there’s water

The rain, the tinkling of water in a garden, even a refreshing shower can lift our spirits.

Or if there’s one nearby that’s accessible, a pool. “I like to rise early as I feel like I get so much more out of the day,” Herbert says. “I get up at 5:30am as I want to be alone and have some time to myself. I go to pool number nine, the largest of the 12 swimming pools that anchor Alma Resort and cascade down to Long Beach.

“I do a backstroke and, with my view of the sky combined with the buoyancy of the water, I feel like I’m flying; it’s such an incredible feeling. I see the birds and butterflies flying overhead, sometimes an airplane high in the sky.

“I completely switch off; it’s exercise and meditation at the same time. As I lie flat my heartbeat is low. Swimming is very good for my entire system. The sun is just starting to rise and I swim 40 laps, totalling to about 3km in over two hours.

“The pool is absolutely my number one spot in the morning. Starting so early in the morning, I have the pool all to myself. But after two hours, when I leave the pool, guests are emerging.”

#2 Anywhere with a view

A quick break to look out your window, a walk in your neighbourhood, going out to feel the sun’s rays on your face (don’t forget sunscreen), and even travel photos can take us somewhere, even for just a few minutes.

“After my swim, I go back to my suite on the South Tower’s 8th floor and spend some time on my balcony that has panoramic views over our resort and the ocean beyond. It is still early – about 7:30 or 7:45am – and I look down and see the resort literally waking up,” Herbert observes.

“The sun is up in the sky and more and more guests make their way to the pools and the beach. You get a little breeze; the sun is not too high nor too hot and I can rest a bit after the swim. I think of a lot of ideas when I’m swimming – if only I could use a pen and paper at the time! When I’m swimming I feel completely free and the ideas keep flowing. I catch myself on the balcony and try to remember all of those ideas, and start sending them in emails to all of my managers from about 8am.

“I get energised like crazy in the morning. I feel so happy when I step into the office at 9am and, after I start writing my emails in the morning, I have already achieved so much. I swim for two hours, I sit on the balcony thinking of ideas and about what I have to do and achieve. By the official starting time of 9am, people may have just made a coffee to help themselves start their work day, and I've already exercised for two hours and done 1.5 hours of work.”

#3 Anywhere where you can stretch

Not just your muscles but your mind as well.

“This is what exercise does for me in the morning. If you watch YouTube and see what exercise does to your brain, you will see that the brain is very much positively affected by exercise. It does all sorts of wonderful things, ranging from alleviating depression and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease to boosting your self-confidence.”

#4 Anywhere where you can prepare or have your favourite drink

Forget where you are: Close your eyes and inhale the scent of your coffee or tea. Sit on your favourite spot at home at night, and sip your choice of drink.

“Another one of my favourite spots is our Beach Bar situated right on the white powder sands of Long Beach, and my favourite time here is at sunset,” Herbert relates.

“The sun makes its descent into the mountains, not over the sea, and as a result, the water looks so wonderful, like it’s glowing, with fishing boats on its surface. The colours inking the skies are so intense – think pinks and purples – and the guests come out as it’s not too sunny. They engage in a lot of activities on our lawn such as kite flying and taking photos, and swimming in the pools.

“We eat skewers from the BBQ grill and as you sit there, the Beach Bar feels like the main focal point, with many people passing the bar, going to the beach, taking a shower by the beach, having a cocktail, or ordering food and sometimes bringing it back to their families in nearby pavilions.”

#5 Anywhere where you can have a hearty breakfast

It’s a good way to start your day.

“Another spot I love is the Alma Lounge, a semi-open area with incredible panoramic views of the sea, that has huge windows that we open during the day. Each Sunday I go and have my breakfast there, and I always order the same thing – a banh mi baguette with two fried eggs complemented by an orange juice. It feels so peaceful; even when the hotel is full this place is very quiet and the service is excellent.

“The breakfast is so fresh; you order the orange juice and then you hear the buzz of the juicer. I request lime with my orange juice so that it’s sourer.

“Sitting there looking down to the sea, I feel so blessed. My wife Phuong and I don’t sit opposite each other – we sit next to each other so that we can both take in the view.”

#6 Anywhere with your favourite food

This can be your kitchen or a quick trip to a restaurant. Order delivery or get takeaway, and have it in the comfort of your own home. Savour every bite and forget about your worries, even for just a tiny bit.

“Another spot I love at Alma is the vast terrace of La Casa, our fine dining Italian restaurant, by night. As you sit on the terrace, you can see the flow of the guests moving to and from various nearby venues, and they come together on a pedestrian street that connects the V-shaped North and South Towers that house our resort’s suites. After guests finish their dinner, they walk up and down the thoroughfare chit- chatting, as the kids play.”

#7 Anywhere with music

It soothes the soul. Put on your headphones and press play.

“I would like to add one more spot at Alma – the American Bar. In the evening after my dinner, I love to go there and play pool with my wife Phuong. The bar always plays great music and large TV screens air sports matches such as football,” he says.

Sigh. Until then, I can dream. In the meantime, though, what are your favourite spots? I want to know!

“Blue skies. A friendly cycling route with lots of things to see. Sampling good food along the way. A reasonably good bike that could include a basket, or a mountain bike or gravel bike to cover more distance. Smooth cycling, too.”

You could say this description fits the above photos to a T (minus some elements, of course, but you get the drift). The thing is, it was uttered by Kamal Ishnin, the founder of The Bicycle Hut – a bike rental shop that also offers guided cycling tours… in Singapore.

Yes – you don’t necessarily have to go to Europe to experience the perfect bike ride or cycling route, because you can find it right in your own city.

But then it also depends on what you believe to be the ideal scenario. You’re in a bustling city, after all. You won’t exactly see majestic mountains or rivers or rolling hills and plains. (Actually, you might...) Or even 100% clear roads.

There may be a few misconceptions, too-high expectations and false impressions to overcome first. “This was a typical question when we started the enterprise,” Kamal admits.

“It was a lack of understanding and fear of what you could and couldn’t do when cycling. (I’ll elaborate later on.) Until the time we entered the market, most locals generally cycled within their neighbourhood estates, and reserved their cycling to the East Coast Park and West Coast Park areas. There was this fear that cycling in the city was dangerous, and that you could seriously get injured. The locals were ‘fixated’ on looking at the beaches while cycling, when there were three times as much more to do, observe and experience in a city cycling journey. Wouldn’t you agree?”

We would, once we hear his precautions and instructions. “Cycling in European cities has been going on for at least 50 years or more. The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and Switzerland have been doing this with the correct building of infrastructure,” he states.

“What’s important is to observe basic traffic rules and safety for cycling. Usually, I share my cycling experiences overseas to help dispel any fears, and liken them to our own city. A five-minute briefing of a recommended two- to three-hour cycling route with visual landmarks to observe along the way will reassure these folks of any concerns they might also have. We share images of those who have cycled with us, and the things you can experience along the way to allay any doubts.”

For example: “Some key merits of cycling include an improved heart rate, better focus, balance and deep breathing – the basis for a healthier life.”

Let’s get started then

Like right now. The Bicycle Hut promotes a range of cycling routes around Singapore that feature different stops, attractions, national parks, cityscapes and more, but customers can also request for tailored activities according to their own preferences.

Kamal shares his five favourite cycling routes in Singapore to help you feel inspired:

#1 Eastern Coastal Loop and Coney Island

Preferred bike: “Any bike type is suitable.”

“This covers the famous stretch of beach that almost all locals have cycled on. Nice stretch of park connectors that start from the Marina Bay areas and runs for 21km until you hit the newly-built Dinosaur Park located just on the borders of Changi International Airport. Scenic and windy most times, with the waves gently combing the beaches. A great stretch to cycle on weekdays when it’s quiet. Weekends are packed with picnickers and other cyclists. Overall experience: 4 stars.”

#2 Northern Explorer Loop

Preferred bike: “Gravel bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes.”

“Bike on the wild side in northern Singapore: Nature surrounds you, but you will never be too far from heartland neighbourhoods such as Yishun, Sembawang and Woodlands should you want to stop for a break along the way. The entire loop spans around 25km, but you can also opt for a shorter 11km route that takes you from Lower Seletar Reservoir Park to Woodlands Waterfront. Water is a major feature along this route, and you’ll pass through reservoirs, a freshwater swamp, and a jetty at Woodlands Waterfront that’s one of the longest in Singapore. The park connectors will keep you on smooth ground, but you’ll also hit some undulating terrain on your route. Keep a lookout for wildlife such as monkeys and rare birds. Overall experience: 4 stars.”

#3 The Green Corridor or Rail Corridor (85% completed)

Preferred bike: “Gravel bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes.”

“There used to be a Malaysian KTM railway line that cut through the middle of Singapore, from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to the now-defunct Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. Cyclists go on a journey through a variety of landscapes, communities and unique experiences. Enhancements will begin with Rail Corridor (Central), which is known for its lush natural landscapes and elements of rich heritage. Do take note that parts of the Green Corridor nearest to the city is still under construction as we speak. Delays due to COVID-19. Overall experience: 4 stars.”

#4 Ketam* Mountain Bike Park

Preferred bike: “Strictly mountain bike full suspension or hard tails.”

(*“Ketam means ‘crab’ in the colloquial Malay language. Probably so named as it’s on Ubin Island. You need to take a 20-minute bumboat ride from Changi Village to get to the island,” Kamal says.)

“Make your way to Pulau Ubin from Changi Ferry Terminal and enjoy a cycle around Ketam Mountain Bike Park. It’s the first trail in the city-state to meet international standards for mountain biking competitions, with 10km of trails that will suit cyclists of all skill levels. The three tracks have different ratings from the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), so go for one that corresponds with the level you’re comfortable with. If you have time, you can consider turning your bike ride into a full-day trip and discover all that Pulau Ubin has to offer. Important note: The Ketam trail is very technical and recommended only for experienced riders with proper mountain bikes. Overall experience: 5 stars.”

#5 Western Adventure Loop

Preferred bike: “Gravel bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes.”

“Beginning at Chua Chu Kang, this route takes you through various parks and greenways where you’ll get up close and personal with nature. Dairy Farm Nature Park with its rugged terrain is a highlight, as are the Jurong Lake Gardens – home to the beautiful and cultural Chinese Garden and the zen Japanese Garden. This 12km route also comes with several opportunities to hop off your bike for a bit and take breaks in the tranquil and usually uncrowded surrounds. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot one of the roughly 50 bird species that have been sighted along the Bukit Panjang Park connector. The Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden were temporarily closed due to pandemic restrictions, so check the website for updates. Overall experience: 4 stars.”

Hang on a minute

Whew. These routes sound great. Cool. Exhilarating. Exciting. I’m sure avid cyclists can’t wait to hop on their bikes and go on any one of them. It’s just that, erm, what if we haven’t cycled in a long time, and it’s only now that we’re looking at trying the activity again?

“Start with a simple and easy ride on a non-technical bike like a basic city bike,” Kamal recommends. “Build up your confidence and bike handling techniques. It would be good to have a friend join you or you could join a cycling group. Gradually increase the distance and duration of your cycling activities. Once you’ve overcome any doubts, you can hop on a bike and do that 148km-round island journey.”

Don’t forget a few important things too. “Learn how to use brakes properly and gear shifting correctly. Most mechanical faults can be avoided with the correct use of the above. Get yourself kitted with padded cycling shorts for long stretches of cycling. Invest in a helmet, some bicycle lights (front and rear), and a reliable bike lock. Bring water to hydrate yourself, and a set of Allen keys just in case you need to adjust or tighten some parts along the way.”

Now go and create your own path

Once you build up your confidence, that is. Here are a few more tips from Kamal to help you achieve just that:

#1 Beginners can start off with a two- to three-hour journey

“The route around our shop allows you to do just that with loads of ‘makan’ places to choose from. Otherwise you could pick a route from one of the five listed above. There are many more bike routes, of course. We recommend using the National Parks Boards website: Search for park connector networks and find out a list of things that you may encounter on the different routes, from biodiversity and conservation to even bicycle shops and food joints should you have a problem while cycling.”

#2 Check the schedule – and your tool kit

“Important note: Most bike shops are closed on Sundays, so it would be good if someone in the group can handle basic repairs and tube replacements. Always bring a spare bike tube, tire levers and a hand pump. Most folks choose to remain ignorant about all this and would rather pay for a tube replacement. Most tube replacements can be done under 10 minutes. If you’re lucky enough, another cyclist will be able to help you with a tube replacement, but only if you’re that lucky.”

#3 Don’t underestimate or overlook anything

“Avoid the major roads during peak hours. Pay attention to road signages and traffic regulations. All major expressways and all underground expressways are off limits to cycling. Always plan your cycling route if you are going to cycle for more than two to three hours, and check the weather forecast. The humidity can sap your energy if you are unacclimatised. Take more breaks and treat it as a picnic session on wheels.”

A cyclist’s stories

Things change, especially if you’ve been holding cycling tours with The Bicycle Hut since 2013. And it’s been interesting, to say the least.

Kamal’s observations could give you a different perspective and some insight into your cycling journey. (Besides that, they’re also good to know.)

Which way do we ride?

“As I mentioned earlier, when we started this journey, it was to change the mindset of the locals about cycling. We believed a lack of knowledge and understanding of the city areas was a key factor. Our expat communities had already been cycling in the city areas in 2013, while the locals were still cycling in the East Coast Park and West Coast Park beach areas. These locations were designated as ‘bicycle friendly’ areas by the government. It was a safe initiative, although it does have limitations. For 30 years, locals and tourists would ply the East Coast Park stretch of beach as a recreational and tourist activity. Ultimately what happens is an underappreciation of bicycles, and henceforth cycling as a whole. This suppresses creativity in cycling and the broader spectrum of cycling as an unexplored subject within tourism. Therefore, the birth of cycling tourism in Singapore. As you can see, these were all things that plagued my mind at the start. A series of actions would be required to effect some changes.”

Championing cycling

“My travels to Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland reaffirmed my belief that we were going the right and necessary way. There was a definite need to embark on a campaign no matter how small, and reintroduce cycling as a lifestyle. This would in turn catch fire and get support from the government in time. By reaching out to the expat communities and the tourism industry (primarily the key hotels in the city), we were able to get them to understand, support and adopt a cycling culture.

“From 2013 to 2015, our campaigns to attract and entice key hotels within the Marina Bay and Orchard Road belt by offering bike rental and bike touring services to the hotels and travel agents started to bear some results. We partnered with two other bike touring companies that were already operating in the city areas as well. The idea was to synergise a series of already-running bicycle services via a cycling hub by offering bike rentals, bike tours and short group rides (we don’t do this anymore for manpower reasons), all centred within the Marina Bay, Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Orchard Road areas. This in turn would drive businesses to hotels, food establishments and attractions that are aplenty in the city areas, thereby boosting the economy.

“At the same time, we started a small campaign on social media via Google, Facebook and Instagram to connect with expats and locals alike. We would post or share pictures of families and friends as they cycled in the city. It was an arduous process but we enjoyed every bit of it, learning from this experience and the challenges that came along with it. Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

After almost a decade

“We believe that we have succeeded in the campaign we started eight years ago. We never intended for the business to become huge (thanks to COVID-19, locals are cycling more than ever), and we still adopt a laissez-faire policy in running the business. Enter the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore’s vision or Draft Master Plan 2019.

“The Master Plan is a land-use plan that serves as a blueprint to guide Singapore’s physical development. Reviewed every five years, it is a statutory plan that shows the land use and development intensity allowed for every plot of land in Singapore. In March 2019, the URA unveiled key proposals under the Draft Master Plan 2019, which outlined the strategies for Singapore’s development in the next 10 to 15 years. This included the construction of several key park connector networks that would link the entire island, and can be explored by bicycle or walking. Ding-ding!

They say timing is crucial in any endeavour. All of the above factors culminate in the growth of cycling in Singapore – a steady, constant and rapid growth.”

In the end…

“We could talk about Singapore’s past and trends, and why folks thought this way and that, but that would be best done while on a bicycle tour. Most Singaporeans from the ’50s up to the ’70s era cycled within their neighbourhood communities. The bicycle then was a means of basic transport. The nation was in its stages of infancy, gaining independence in 1965. The humble bicycle served as a part of life but not a lifestyle per se. I guess it depends on how you look at it. As public transportation improved in Singapore, the bicycle served a secondary transport role for parents to ferry their children to and from school, or for going to the nearby wet market for light grocery and household requirements. I believe it’s similar in many other countries as well, be it in Asia or Europe.”

Final thoughts (and tips)

Because it doesn’t hurt to be extra-prepared. It may spell the difference between you having a nice ride and, well, not.

“Unlike traditional bike shops, we don’t engage in retail or bike repairs. There are over 400 bike shops in Singapore, so take your pick. We could make recommendations on which local bike shop suits you best,” Kamal suggests.

“Our key focus is still cycling tourism and the promotion of cycling as a whole. We tried to link up with some eco-tourism agencies in Malaysia and Thailand in 2015, but it was too taxing and time-consuming a subject to look into with a large requirement of logistics and staff. So that has to wait awhile for now. We do a lot of thinking most times.”

And yet, “We have a variety of bicycles to rent for self-exploratory tours, and you can also join our pocket bike tours,” he reveals. “Pocket bike tours are from Wednesdays to Sundays at S$80 per person, minimum of two persons required. Bookings need to be made at least five days in advance to ensure tour guide availability. If we are not able to help you, we will refer you to the next bike touring company that is in partnership with us.”

#1 Think it through

“Plan ahead if you intend to cycle. Get as much information as you can ahead of your cycling date in unfamiliar territory. Contact the bike shop and ask for suggestions.”

#2 Choose the most suitable bike

“Take note that different bikes have different uses. Get the right type of bicycle for the right job. Some are for light cruising for a two- to three-hour journey. Others are for long-distance cycling and will cost a bit more.”

#3 Know where to get help

“At The Bicycle Hut, we make every effort to assist customers who have a bike breakdown within a 3km radius (within half an hour) of the shop, although that may not be possible on busy weekends and holidays. If you are planning to cycle long journeys, say beyond 20km, be prepared to contact a bicycle transport company to assist you if you have a breakdown. You can use Gogovan or Lalamove to help you with this. They’re like Uber and Grab but for transporting goods and services, and most times they can pick you up within 30 minutes of booking. If you are more than 10km away with a breakdown, then use Gogovan. Good thing is, breakdowns are rare and usually tube punctures.” We can rest easy and just enjoy the experience then.

Me, I think of the Orient Express.

And the image that I have of the Orient Express is the one that’s featured in “Once Upon A Time On The Orient Express” – the pop-up attraction that’s currently showing at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

Singapore is the exhibition’s first-ever stop outside of France, and thanks to the Arab World Institute (IMA) and Visionairs in Art, visitors will get a chance to see recreations of the elegant designs, experiences and journeys of the Orient Express from its heyday in the 1880s to 1930s, when the historic locomotive travelled through destinations like London, Paris, Venice, Istanbul, Baghdad, Cairo and more.

The good news? The exhibition was supposed to end on 13 June 2021, but it’s been extended to 05 January 2022.

A massive undertaking

When you hear from Lydie Blandeau, the CEO and founder of Visionairs in Art – the production company and museum consultancy behind “Once Upon A Time On The Orient Express” – you’ll appreciate the time, care and effort it took for the team to get this project off the ground and off to Singapore.

“What’s mind-blowing is the fact that we transported 100 tonnes of France’s national treasure, the original engine machine and Orient Express train carriages, to Singapore all the way from France during the COVID-19 period,” she says.

Not only that, but they’ve also brought in interactive displays, artefacts and other priceless objects too.

“Often when we go to museums or exhibitions, we are only able to see artefacts from a distance,” Lydie observes.

“At ‘Once Upon A Time On The Orient Express’, it is a privilege to walk inside the original train carriages that are over 100 years old. I was truly impressed by how the atmosphere, even the smell, made it feel like I had time-travelled. This is a very impressive element unique to all other museums or exhibitions.”

It is larger than life

So I guess I’m not the only one whose imagination runs wild whenever I think of how it must have been like as a passenger back then?

I wonder what I would’ve done, and how I would’ve enjoyed the trip.

Well, Lydie has an idea. “On my journey, I would enjoy a dark chocolate bar and revel in the change of scenery, the luxurious ambience, and appreciate the unique mode of travel,” she admits.

“Since the Orient Express stops in many locations, it would be fascinating to speak to many people from other places, to hear the stories of their individual journeys on the train.”

It would be fascinating to taste the dishes too.

“In addition to the exhibition, there is a unique luxury restaurant and café with a beautiful terrace in view of the grand 158-year-old locomotive,” she adds.

“Both have been curated by Yannick Alléno, a Michelin-starred French chef. The food is well-prepared day to day by Sebastien Lefort, Yannick’s right hand, with fresh premium ingredients that are flown in from France. This is also a challenge during the COVID-19 period.” (Update: It's now headed by Chef Isaac Henry.)

What’s more, “Our restaurant is a magical replica of a dining carriage, where you will experience the ambience and bespoke menus befitting the Orient Express era. I recommend dining in to further enhance your exhibition experience.”

Piece by piece

But who were the Orient Express’s passengers, anyway? And its makers?

The best way to find out is to either explore their memories or look at their things – and the exhibition has them in spades. Lydie shares her favourites:

#1 It’s personal

“As you walk through the train’s interior, you will find information on the different people who travelled on the Orient Express many years ago. This element of the exhibition helps give visitors a glimpse into history, and further emphasise the significance of the Orient Express as a mode of travel long ago.”

#2 It’s in the past

“The history of Georges Nagelmackers shows us the true beginning of the Orient Express and the amount of work and effort it took to make the idea a reality,” Lydie maintains. (A Belgian businessman and engineer, Georges is the founder of Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, the company that developed the Orient Express.)

“I personally enjoy this because it reminds me of the work and effort it took to make this exhibition a reality.”

#3 It’s branded

“In the exhibition, along with many artefacts, we uniquely feature vintage Louis Vuitton trunks that have been preserved from 1922 to 1923. For myself as a luxury brand lover, it is very intriguing to see the difference between modern and contemporary luxury design compared to vintage items.”

#4 Plus it’s kid-friendly

“If you are visiting the exhibition with kids, there is an adventurous activity book that will enhance their experience by promoting more interaction with the exhibition content,” she suggests.

“The questions in the activity book will prompt children to find the answers within the exhibition. Sometimes it can be hard for children to absorb lots of information when visiting museums or exhibitions. This is why the pedagogy book was created – to promote a more interactive, fun experience, which the parents will be happy to share.”

So which "destinations" or areas in the exhibition will you stop at?

It all seems so long ago

And so far away in people’s memories. But having an exhibition like “Once Upon A Time On The Orient Express” still leaves us with lessons and insights that we can use in our own lives, and in the way we do things.

“Napoleon said, ‘Impossible is not French.’ Anything is possible if you are resilient and determined to make it happen,” Lydie stresses.

“Many people did not believe that we would be able to transport the Orient Express trains across the world and make this exhibition a reality in Singapore.” But they did, and the success of the exhibition (it is being extended till January) is proof.

On the bright side, though, it might make us feel hopeful and wistful about travel again. And treasure our own travel memories. (And maybe inspire us to organise our own travel mementos on our walls?) And not take it for granted.

“Once Upon A Time On The Orient Express” makes me look back at my journeys by train, and wish that I could relive them. But I can’t for now, so I’ll just contentedly settle for the Orient Express’s photos and interesting stories.

The way the sun touches your skin and leaves you feeling giddy.

That fresh, clean scent of the outdoors in spring.

Too bad I can only imagine all this. I’m not even sure if my description is accurate.

But I can dream.

Yes, it’s cherry blossom (sakura) season in Japan.

And I’m wishing I can experience it all, particularly in Tokyo – not just the views, but the hanami (flower viewing) parties and picnics too. The sakura-themed bento lunch boxes and pink drinks. The reverence and quiet celebrations. The people.

But I can’t. (A lot of us from overseas can’t.)

Although it will also be a bit different for the locals this year. “Because of the pandemic, we can no longer continue the habit (of celebrating the cherry blossoms under the cherry blossom trees with enjoyable drinks and foods) in spring,” says Yoshimi Nagase of the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tokyo Now.

“But the cherry blossoms will definitely bloom this year, and we can feel the beautiful cherry blossoms more by themselves without people.”

So check with the various parks and facilities first to see if you can go, and for current restrictions. (Lucky you, if you’re already in Tokyo.) The season there lasts from around March to April.

Did you know…

“The cherry blossom is a symbol of school events in Japanese life,” shares Nagase.

“For me, I love to attend the graduation or entrance ceremony for schools. Those events are always conducted around the end of March and the beginning of April, where we always see cherry blossoms.

“Whenever I see cherry blossoms, I remember those events with friends and families.”

Are you with friends and family? Why not appreciate the cherry blossoms on your own? (I would, if I could.) Nagasa tells us that the most famous spot in Tokyo for cherry blossoms is Ueno Park, while the number one trending spot for the Japanese is the Meguro River.

Did you also know…

… you get different shades of pink depending on the variety and species of cherry blossom? In some areas they bloom starting January or February, so make sure to call or ask ahead.

and raise it and care for it by yourself. You’ll be able to admire it a lot of the time then.

Since the cherry blossoms will only be there for around two weeks or so, you should enjoy it while you can.

(It also drives home the point that you should appreciate what you have now, or what’s in front of you at the moment, because it’ll be gone before you know it. You might miss your chance.)

#3 There’s a four season sakura

If you can’t be in Tokyo during spring, autumn at Aichi Prefecture could be the next best thing. Catch the shikizakura or four season sakura there.

#4 Gaze at them at night

They look even more magical with lights.

Try this

Just a thought: Why not have your own cherry blossom-themed picnic at home? You might not be in Japan to witness and experience the season, and that’s okay.

#1 Get bento boxes

and fill them up with your choice of Japanese food.

# Pick colours

that are as similar to cherry blossoms as possible. Buy flowers as centrepieces and for decoration. Go for pink with your food and drinks. (Think about all of the pretty desserts you can buy.) Sakura mochi, anyone?

#3 Spritz a floral scent around your room

#4 Hang pink and white lights

all around your picnic area. If they twinkle, all the better.

#5 Watch anime

I did, and still do. The last one I saw was Violet Evergarden. It helps me take my mind off things. And we probably need that to some degree right now.

Artists don’t (and likely won’t) stop creating, and that can be a good thing.

One such artist is jazz pianist Cheryl Ann Spencer. “The pandemic allowed me to rest and explore new voicings for jazz,” she admits.

“I used the pandemic to learn the drums and bass guitar. I aim to be well-rounded and knowledgeable about other instruments too.”

But that’s just her. What if she wants to collaborate with other artists and musicians as well?

Cheryl made it all work, and the result is Singapore jazz band Evolution Quartet’s debut jazz album, Reflections.

Evolution Quartet is made up of Cheryl, pianist and band leader; Fabian Lee, bassist; Tamagoh, drummer; and Rit Xu, flutist. The album also includes contributions by guest artist Alex Sipiagin, trumpeter.

“Alex is based in New York and Rit Xu was in New York pursuing his Masters degree,” Cheryl notes. “It wasn’t easy to get everyone together, but we made it eventually!”

The finished product is proof. “The whole album is about the joys, heartaches and excitement in life,” she muses.

“I would recommend ‘My Favourite Things’ to those who grew up with the Sound of Music. Then, I would recommend ‘Shoe Shopping’, ‘Rainbow (Arco Iris)’ and ‘My Papa’ for first-time jazz listeners.

“‘Reflections’, ‘Evolution’ and ‘Magic Carpet’ have more complex harmonies, and are great for seasoned jazz listeners who appreciate modern jazz.”

The long road

Given the current situation, it’s amazing how Cheryl and the band were able to reach this point and finally have the opportunity to share their work.

“It has been a surreal experience pursuing jazz music formally – even producing an album while attending to my duties as a mother with two kids,” she reveals.

“I was a full-time banker in London before I left the profession to take care of my family. In this endeavour, I had to forgo lots of leisure time for practice sessions. My kids also go out less because I need to sit by the piano and crunch my way through. The first six months to one year were particularly difficult. I would practice till midnight every day, but my family and Christian faith kept me going.”

So did her fellow bandmates. “I had to produce good compositions, and I needed to turn these compositions into reality. I spent a lot of time writing out the scores and harmony,” Cheryl relates.

“I wrote different compositions featuring different instruments. My band had to test the harmony, rhythm, tempo and melody as well.

“My musicianship improves whenever I allow myself to face the real challenges of playing and recording music with good musicians,” she emphasises.

“It is not easy to record an album; you need to open your ears big and wide, and you need to improvise on the spot as well. Therefore, the brain must be sharp and alert.”

Dream venues

Now that they have Reflections on their hands, there’s one thing left to do: perform the tracks (plus Cheryl’s own jazz pieces). That is, when it becomes possible.

Where would Cheryl love to play? (This would also give us an idea of where we might catch them soon.)

#1 Victoria Concert Hall

“It has lots of history, and I would love to perform there as well,” she states.

“My father used to bring us to Victoria Concert Hall all the time. I really have great memories there.”

#2 Esplanade

“I would like to perform the pieces at the Esplanade Recital Studio in an intimate setting. This would allow me to connect with my audience.”

#3 Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage

This is located at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. “I love the lush greenery,” Cheryl says.

#4 Maduro

“This is a premier jazz club in the Dempsey area.”

#5 Raffles Hotel

“I love the colonial setting and it suits jazz.”

“I’ve been listening to Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Aaron Parks, Kenny Barron, McCoy Tyner, Barry Harris, Robert Glasper, Sasha Mashin, Keith Jarrett, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky... it’s endless!”

Playing them often keeps her feeling good and grounded. “We need to feed our brains with the right sounds in order to play good music,” she observes.

“Jazz harmony runs deep in my veins. It awakens my senses and I feel so motivated and joyous.”

And it’s not just that. Cheryl also realised a few things throughout her journey and with Reflections.

#1 Hard work works

“We need to be patient with ourselves. It cannot be rushed. Improvements will be visible at every six-month mark if you practice hard and daily.”

#2 It’s okay to fail

“Life is short, live it to the fullest. Failure makes us stronger,” she adds.

“We won’t know the outcome unless we try, and I believe in doing everything with my utmost excellence. I do not compete with anyone but myself.”

#3 Be kind to yourself

“We don’t need to be someone else. I finally found my own sound and touch after three years.”

#4 Believe in yourself

“People will criticise your playing and style, but you need to be confident to know if it’s true. If it is, take it positively and improve.”

#5 Surround yourself with positive people who support you

Cheryl has her family and bandmates. And because of that, we now have Reflections to listen to and enjoy.

The moon, the stars, the inky blackness… the vastness, the potential, the endlessness. Our smallness.

As you can see, it also makes me think and spout nonsense.

Sigh. If only I could find better spots and take decent photos of the stars to remember them by. But I can’t even manage so-so shots of everyday things with my phone.

Luckily, I know someone who can.

Not just decent

Ivan Bok, an astrophotographer based in Singapore, takes amazing and memorable photos of the stars and night sky.

His work has been featured in international astronomy magazines such as Sky & Telescope, and in print at local photography exhibitions. He’s also had an astrophoto awarded third place at the Wikipedia Science Competition in 2017.

Plus he’s the focus of the documentary, Galactic Paint.

Capturing those stunning sights must be pretty cool.

“In general, I’d say that photographs of space bring about a sense of awe and wonder about the beauty of nature,” Ivan says.

“Taking photos of the stars brings about a more personal connection, because you know that the images you’ve captured were created from light that has travelled across the great expanse of deep space. When we look at the sheer number of stars in images that we can’t see with our naked eye, it really gives a sense of how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things.”

(So I’m not alone in feeling like this. Yay. Okay, moving on.)

“I guess the best part about astrophotography is being able to do things that seem impossible,” Ivan adds.

“Even just a few years ago, I wouldn’t have thought that I would be able to capture photographs of deep space from light-polluted Singapore, or from my own home, for that matter. Even having done astrophotography for over 10 years, I am still ceaselessly amazed by the wonders of the heavens.”

Astronomy and astrophotography according to Ivan

Ivan reveals that he has been into astronomy since primary school, and that he bought his first telescope at age 14 (and shortly stuck a camera to it). He was able to upgrade his equipment steadily by selling his old ones and through part-time work.

His experiences have helped shape the way he now looks at astronomy.

“To me, astronomy is about an awareness of what exists out there,” he relates.

“It may seem unimportant given that what happens in space doesn’t really affect our day-to-day lives, but looking out into the depths of space really gives us a different perspective of who we are and where we came from (considering how the Earth was created by cosmic events happening billions of years in the past).”

We hear his musings about astrophotography too.

“Personally, I am someone who appreciates both art and science, and astrophotography is really the confluence of both,” he continues.

“While the steps needed to capture the images can be quite technical, many decisions made during the processing stage borders on artistic choice as well (in terms of how colours are balanced, or how certain features are enhanced over others).

“To me, astrophotography is also the way I consider myself connecting with the Universe on a personal level.”

Oh, and by the way, the answer is no

No, you can’t just up and take photos of the night sky and expect something truly spectacular to come out every time.

“There’s one big misconception about the way astrophotography is done,” Ivan points out.

“Unlike practically most other forms of photography, astrophotography isn’t just about zooming into the sky and taking a snapshot. Each astroimage requires many days of painstaking work – several hours of setting up a telescope, several hours (or days) of shooting long exposures of the same target, and yet many more hours doing the processing.

“Rather than shooting many shots and simply picking out the best one, as we so often do, astrophotography is a very deliberate and methodical process.”

Then again, we shouldn’t give up

If you’re really passionate about the stars and night sky, Ivan recommends three of his favourite places to admire them and hopefully start your astrophotography journey. So keep going!

#1 Your window

“Over the past few years, I have been doing astrophotography exclusively from my home window. This was also the place that was featured in Galactic Paint,” he states.

“While Singapore is probably one of the worst places to do astronomy, the convenience of shooting from home has allowed me to maximise what I have in terms of time and equipment. This really allowed me to be quite productive despite the light pollution.

“The other, more sentimental reason that this place is significant to me is because it is also the place where I live my life. This alludes to the fact that even when I am going about with my own business in day-to-day life, I can still see the stars shining not too far away.”

#2 The East Coast of Malaysia

“This is the nearest place Singaporeans can go to to access a dark sky. Of course, we still get the same tropical weather, so it’s not always a successful trip down.”

#3 The Australian Outback

“For astronomy, this is probably as good as it gets,” Ivan observes.

“I went to the Australian Outback just for astrophotography a couple of times. The clear desert sky and complete absence of light pollution make it one of the best places for stargazing on Earth.

“The Milky Way arches from horizon to horizon, and the complex structure of the Milky Way is visible to the unaided eye. A truly spectacular experience just to be there, and to see how our ancestors would have seen the stars before the advent of artificial lighting.”

And you don’t have to miss out

Don’t have the proper equipment? Ivan has some good advice for those of us who only have our cameras and smartphones.

“Not going to lie – astrophotography gets expensive very quickly. However, for different budgets, there are different things one could do,” he maintains.

#1 With smartphones

“Many smartphones these days are capable of shooting star trails. All you need is a tripod. It is also possible to shoot photos of the moon or planets with a smartphone through a telescope, which you might have the opportunity to do so during astronomy outreach events (or during the regular stargazing sessions at various places around Singapore, e.g. Singapore Science Centre, Chua Chu Kang CC, Galaxy CC).”

#2 With a second-hand DSLR

“For those want to do more serious work, consider a second-hand DSLR,” he suggests.

“Some of the old models run for $150 or less, and are more than enough for you to shoot photographs of the Milky Way. Camera trackers that allow you to track the motion of the stars to do longer exposures can also be purchased rather inexpensively, and will greatly improve the images you can capture.”

Sounds good to me. Shall we go get our blankets, sit back (or lie down), gaze up at the night sky, and snap a shot or two tonight? I’m in.

Well, maybe you don’t have to.

“I think it is worthwhile to say in all honesty that the stories I have had the privilege to tell chose me,” admits Ong Kah Jing, or OKJ as he is more known.

OKJ is a storyteller, documentary filmmaker and director based in Singapore – which probably explains his reply. Because of his work, he encounters a lot of viewpoints and narratives worth spreading.

“With such an abundance of interesting stories, life’s serendipitous nature has taken me to different places and people – gifting me with many opportunities that leave me with glee,” he relates.

Unfortunately, he can only focus on some of them.

“I have also turned down a fair amount of these opportunities,” he muses.

“I choose to tell a particular story only if I can (This is a question of ability and confidence. Do I have what it takes? Do I have the ability to gain access? Most importantly, do I have the confidence to fill in the gaps in my ability if I do not?), if I should (This is a question of morality. It is one that is slowly evolving within me with each new project. Right now, it is anchored by the work’s impact on society and its repercussions on the film’s subjects. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.), and if I am compelled to (This is a question of motivation. Meaningful work requires much devotion, for its challenges will turn away those with short term rationality.)

“Only after passing these three criteria will I take on the work of telling a story,” he concludes.

In his short film, A Sunny Past, OKJ chronicles Sunny Ng’s quest to keep the memories of his kampung – Chye Kay Village – alive through stories contributed by the community, as well as through a graphic book. It won the AIC Video Competition 2019.

And in his documentary The Conservation Conversation, OKJ reveals the issues that arise when conservation efforts clash with people’s survival and sources of livelihood. It won at the 2017 National Youth Film Awards.

Whether our “chosen” story is about a serious subject or a light one, our own or someone else’s, we don’t necessarily have to be a filmmaker to document it well, and fairly. But it does help if we can get a guide like OKJ to show us how to make the process a bit easier and more fulfilling.

Is there a story that “chose” you, or you wish to pursue, on film or any other medium? Here are OKJ’s tips to make it shine.

#1 Immerse yourself

“I see the documentary as a medium that transfers experiences from reality through film to its audience. In that belief is the notion that one should have experienced it for themselves or be incapable of this task. It is also perhaps the most rewarding part of being a documentary storyteller,” OKJ observes.

“For Trespass: Stories From Singapore’s Thieves Market, I realised by my sixth day of shooting that I was not capturing moments with intention – and it was reflected in my quality of work. I decided right then to leave my camera at home for a few weeks and simply talk, listen and experience the place with my senses. That immersion influenced the way I treated my work, as it should. When the film was screened to those familiar with the place, they felt the same way too. It was their response that validated this tip for me.”

#2 Respect your subject

“It is often tempting to tweak the narrative of the subjects within our work – the blemishes, the mistakes, the ironies. And with documentaries requiring the process of cutting for the sake of time and other matters of practicality, some would use the opportunity to ‘tell a better story’ at the expense of integrity. Regardless of the end goal, I object to this approach, for I believe that it ultimately takes away from what our work seeks to represent,” OKJ maintains.

“For The Conservation Conversation, we were faced with many ironies regarding the efforts of nature conservation. This led to many crossroads in the editing room where we had to evaluate what was ‘right’.

“It is worthy to note that this was my first documentary – so it hit me hard when I became aware of my involvement in others’ storytelling, the responsibility that came with it, and its repercussions on public discourse. With much deliberation, we went with showcasing the irony and duality of the efforts and the people. This was noticed by one of the interviewees, who to our relief was equally fair in her response as we were in our portrayal of her work.”

#3 Explore what is visually possible

“A cornerstone of documentary storytelling is the interplay between words and visuals. Those words, be it through interviews or text, can be expressed in a great variety of ways visually,” OKJ declares.

“In the context of Singapore, the avenues available to storytellers are plentiful. From freelancers that range from cinematographers to animators, and institutions such as the National Archives of Singapore, there are so many ways that one can explore to visually add to a story.

“For Trespass: Stories From Singapore’s Thieves Market, the necessity to fill in the visual gaps caused by a lack of resources and film media forced me to explore other alternatives – and for the better. It was an exciting experience to sift through decades of information at the National Archives of Singapore – pieces that would be used for the opener (a time-travelling wormhole of news article clippings),” he continues.

“It was also exciting to witness an artist render scenes of the past in watercolour – her work elevates the historical retelling of a protagonist. This experience expanded my perspective of what could be – and it has since made me aware of even more approaches to documentary storytelling.

“I highly recommend Mercury 13 and Shirkers on Netflix for those who are interested in how archival images can be used innovatively in documentary storytelling. There is also Another Day of Life, an animated documentary about the Angolan War.”

#4 Pay attention to sound

“I believe that the audio element distinguishes the professionals from the amateurs. High-quality sound design, be it through great recording and/or great sound mixing, will elevate your work. Some have argued that audiences are more willing to forgive bad visuals as opposed to bad audio. I am a believer of that notion,” OKJ confirms.

“This was emphasised in my latest work, Galactic Paint, in which the sounds were all meticulously recorded so as to immerse the audience in the environment that the protagonist was in. Having received feedback particularly on the sound, it is an element that I will continue to respect and improve on.”

One more piece of advice

“Does it do the story justice?”

This question can help you handle the responsibility of recounting someone else’s story. Ask it when you have to make crucial decisions too, says OKJ.

“What have I learnt from this approach? Well, people respond to your respect for their stories with positivity,” he answers.

“I have had the opportunity to learn, explore and grasp an understanding of the world. In short, I have lived more because of them. And to respect is not always to agree. Meaningful decades and articulation of thought have opened far more doors for me than agreements ever could have. And that process is also necessary for telling others’ stories.”

There’s just one tiny problem

I’ve never gone trekking, cycling or bird-watching in all of my travels. (A little hiking and exploring some nature trails, maybe.) I’d need some serious prepping before I can go ahead and book that trip.
